Guess What?

Yesterday was my last day of work for the 2010-2011 academic year! 



I have the entire month of July off...





...and I plan to enjoy every minute!

Wolli Creek, Wolli Dancing (Theme Day: The Colour Green)

This green sculpture is located in the middle of a large roundabout at the intersection of Arncliffe Street and Brodie Sparks Drive, in the southern suburb of Wolli Creek. "Wolli Dancing" was created by Australian sculptor Blaze Krstanoski-Blazeski and unveiled in this newly redeveloped area in 2008. The plaque reads: Wolli Dancing relates to the Wolli tradition; a place that represents openness, which expresses joy, such as dancing. It captures the sensation and enthusiasm of the performers.

What To Wear Wednesday! (WTWW) 4th of July!



I hate to admit it but there is definitely some RIGHT & WRONG ways to show your patriotic spirit..

So in celebration, my what to wear Wednesday is all both the FOURTH!!!

Get your watermelon, hot-dogs and a few cold ones and lets have some fun!!

 Love the simplicity of these pieces, on their own they can be worn anytime of the summer, but together their patriotic without screaming tackiness.. 


And finally, we all know we had this experience growing up, or if you didn't then your very lucky!! Mine was never exactly on the 4th but my sister, mom and I had some sweet matching outfits for other holidays! 
(mother's day and of course Christmas..)

Ukrainian Artist Constructs Wooden Miniature Bikes By Woodcarving


The Lvov-based artist dreamed of owning a motorcycle ever since he was just a kid, and rode his first one in the seventh grade. At the same time he was always fascinated in hand-made miniatures, and developed a passion for woodcarving. So even though he couldn’t afford to buy himself a real motorcycle, he found that he could create his own perfect wooden replicas.

The idea of making his first 1:12 scale wooden motorcycle first came to Vyacheslav a year and a half ago, and it promptly turned into a hobby. He was motivated by some other motorcycle miniatures he had seen online, and wanted to see if he could make his own, from wood. In the beginning, he had some doubts he could really pull it off, but after figuring out what kind of wood to use for each component, things started going smoothly. He finished his first bike and noticed that every new one he created looked enhanced than the last.



Vyacheslav Voronovich believes the choice of the right wood spirit is crucial for his art, because every type of wood has its own exclusive characteristics. Pine is easier to work with than oak or beech, but it doesn’t even come close to them in terms of aesthetics. The most hard task is to create the tiny components (handlebars, rear-view mirrors, gear shifters, turn signals, brake discs, etc.), because they often tend to break when they’re nearly completed, and he has to start all over again. But seeing as he only works with a common cutter with disposable blades, he does a pretty splendid job.

The artist’s collection already numbers three choppers he made based on his own taste, and two sports bike replicas of the Honda CBR1000 RR and the Suzuki GSX-R600. He is at present working on a wooden replica of the Honda VT1300 CS cruiser, for which he’s using a new wood-bending expertise to make the handlebars and the frame.

Angels in Blog-land

I've been blogging for almost six months and have virtually met a lot of creative, talented, friendly folk... but I never realized there were angels in Blog-land.


As you know, I'm working on Barbara Brackman's Civil War Block of the Week.  I decided to join in this year-long project in June and caught up with the blocks I was behind in two weeks.  I also decided that I would only use stash... mostly fabrics leftover from making the tumbler quilt.



Because the tumbler quilt is for my nephew, I didn't have a lot of shirtings because I wanted to have mostly the medium and darker colors.   So... my choice of light fabrics is limited and was growing slimmer with each new Civil War block.



One of my new blog friends emailed and offered me some shirtings from her stash, promising that she had plenty and would love to share.  She assured me that this was a gift and could not be considered me going out and buying fabric.  


Angel KD's package arrived today... and I should say the box arrived today!  It was like Christmas here around noon... my angel didn't send me a few shirtings... she sent me a ton of shirtings all tied up in a pretty bow.




I now have lots and lots of beautiful light fabrics to choose among...



...and look at this fabric!  It looks like antique cross-stitch!



My angel even sent a few reds "for spice"...


The fabrics are much lovelier than my very meager photography skills show and I'm eagerly awaiting this coming Saturday's Civil War block posting so I can use these gorgeous fabrics!

I never knew there were angels in Blog-land...

how to cook a steak and twitter

I just have to share with you all that last week I was watching Jamie Oliver live on the internet okay on my boxee so I could see him on the big screen. Anyway he was cooking steak and one of his tips was the best cut of steak to get was with bone in. In all my years of cooking never ever knew that. Seriously how could I have missed that tip with the recipe collector I am.

I was really excited about this tip so I posted on twitter about it and low and behold Jamie Oliver RT my tweet!!!!! How exciting is that! Okay maybe not exciting to you but really really exciting to me. The girl who loves to cook and create in the kitchen has a real live cook RT her tweet!


On to the cooking:

Beef is one of the most versatile, delicious and easy-to-cook food you can find.

Choose the cooking method for your steaks. Tender steaks can be cooked by dry heat cooking methods such as broiling, pan-broiling and grilling; less tender steaks can be cooked by these methods, too if marinated prior to cooking.

Use correct cooking temperature. Cooking beef steaks at too high a temperature can cause the outside of the steak to char before the interior reaches the proper doneness.

If you are cooking steaks dry, pat beef steaks dry with paper towels for better browning.

You may leave the thin layer of fat on the steaks during cooking to preserve juiciness. Trim the fat after cooking. Most steaks purchased in supermarkets have a fat trim of 1/2 inch or less.

Add salt or seasonings containing salt to each side after browning. Salt added before cooking draws out moisture and inhibits browning.

Turn steaks with tongs. Do not use a fork, which pierces the beef and allows flavorful juices to escape. Turn chopped steaks (beef patties) with a spatula. Do not flatten them because flavorful juices may escape and result in a dry product.

Cooking times for Select and Choice grades are comparable; however for Select beef, be careful not to overcook as it can quickly become dry and less flavorful.

Use marinades and rubs correctly.
Always marinate in the refrigerator, never at room temperature.
Tender beef cuts need to be marinated only 15 minutes or up to 2 hours for flavor.
Less tender beef cuts should be marinated at least 6 hours or up to 24 hours.
A tenderizing marinade reaches about 1/4 inch into the cut surface of the beef.
Marinating longer than 24 hours in a tenderizing marinade can result in a mushy surface texture.

DIY Magic Shell

this is so easy to make you are going to kick yourself for not making it sooner.

1 1/4 Cups Chocolate Chips
1/2 Cup Coconut Oil (measured when solid)


Melt chocolate chips and coconut oil in the microwave about 1 minute (depending on your microwave). (or on the stove top)
Allow to sit a few minutes to allow the heat of the oil to melt the chocolate chips and then stir until smooth.
It will be runny.

Pour into a reusable container.... if you refrigerate you might want it in a glass container for reheating it.

While this is a great opportunity to celebrate and commemorate America’s Declaration of Independence, it is also a time to honor all of our soldiers, past and present. We thank those who have served and serve so that we may continue to enjoy our freedoms.

4th of July Fun Facts:

The Rocks, First Fleet Park, Vivid Sydney

This interactive lighting installation was located in First Fleet Park at The Rocks, near Circular Quay, during the Vivid Sydney festival. "Immersion" was created by Australia's Martin Bevz and Kathryn Clifton. People were able to move around the LED tube lighting, reflecting their movement through the installation via a live video relay of still and dynamic images.

I Spy

A friend and co-worker is expecting a little girl in November and I wanted to make her a baby quilt.... particularly, an "I Spy" quilt.  


Because psychologists can have strong opinions about what best supports cognitive development in babies, I wanted gender-neutral prints, no "character prints," and bright colors...


The nursery is painted a color named "agave," which is similar to the turquoise border and binding.


I used fabrics leftover from one of the grandbaby quilts for the back...  Deb Strain's Love U line.


...and did simple diagonal quilting across the squares and zigzag stitching on both sides of the border.  I machine sewed down the binding since I figured this quilt would see a lot of trips through the washer and dryer.



Making a baby quilt is a such nice small project... and finishing something is definitely a morale boost, especially when you're working on larger projects!

I purchased the pre-cut I Spy squares from SewTogether on Etsy, who also has gender-specific I Spy squares and sets of rainbow colors.


So much easier and cheaper than finding and buying all those different prints!

I am so glad that Sarah Burton is working for Alexander McQueen, she is doing a great job and won so many woman's heart. For resort 2012 her motto was "Romantic utility" which I really love. The collection is a mix of the military green, embroidery garments, high-waisted belts, mid calf skirts and jackets, that makes the meaning of a twenty-first century princess. Even better introducing cotton to McQueen family is a fabulous idea!
