Extraordinary Underwater Art Exhibition

In the clear shallow waters off Cancun in Mexico, 200 ghostly figures are gradually lowered to the seabed.

It's the final installment of a strange underwater art exhibition, which spans 420 square meters of barren sea bed in the area's national marine park.

Officially due to open next month, the exhibition entitled "The Silent Evolution," is the work of British sculptor and scuba diver Jason deCaires Taylor.

Consisting of 403 life-size human figures, each sculpture has been independently cast by deCaires Taylor and made using unique cement mix to encourage coral growth.

Created to highlight the decimation of the world's coral reefs, deCaires Taylor told he wanted to "create an immense artificial reef, a habitat space that would encourage fish to colonize and inhabit the area."

It is hoped the artistic reef bed will attract some of the park's 750,000 yearly visitors away from the natural reefs, which need time to recover and expand.

"It's extremely interesting working underwater," said deCaires Taylor, who explained how the work had shaped a new and dynamic perspective for audiences.

"The colors are different, the light patterns are very diverse, the atmosphere and mood is otherworldly. The piece takes on a very different tone underwater - it has a missing feel to it and brings up all these questions that you wouldn't have on land," he said.

Spiteful Asian Fruit Fly Found In Michigan

Michigan State University Extension researchers have found a spiteful Asian fruit fly the spotted wing Drosophila in numerous areas in the southern end of the state. The fly attacks fruits that are among Michigan's most popular, including the cherries available at Overhiser Orchards. Researchers consider the invader has the potential to severely damage fruit crops if not managed properly.

The spotted wing Drosophila is native to southeast Asia, but has been turning up in astonishing places lately. First spotted in California in 2008, the fly was then seen north in Oregon and Washington. It has yet been found in Florida.

Michigan has a spotted wing Drosophila response team that formed previous this year to detect and combat the fly. Further monitoring is taking place this fall to decide where the fly is present in the state.

First European To Top The World Rankings

Lee Westwood has taken over from Tiger Woods as golf's new world number one, after Martin Kaymer failed to conclude in the top two in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama on Sunday.

Briton Westwood, who becomes the first European to top the world rankings since Nick Faldo in 1994, has climbed to the summit in spite of never having won one of golf's four 'major' titles.

And in doing so, the 37-year-old ends Woods' remarkable 281-week control as the world's top golfer. Woods has been top of the tree since enduringly taking over from Vijay's Vijay Singh in June 2005.

Westwood opted to skip this week's European Tour event in Spain, meaning European Ryder Cup colleague Kaymer could have taken the top position if he had won the tournament or shared second place with no more than one other player.

Barbie Fashion Show 2009 Collection

I’m sure by now you’ve all watched the Barbie Fashion Show 2009 Collection finale on my blog, if not you should its so good! Luckily I didn’t have to wait to get in because I heard there were 100s of people locked out, even if you had an invite it didn’t mean you’re getting in. The line to get check-in and get into the show was horrendous, it was the longest and craziest I’ve seen so far. After I got in, I’ve been Twittering like mad once I entered the Tent, I spotted Diane von Furstenberg, Kimora Lee Simmons and Djimon Hounsou, Simon Doonan, Sarah Colette (so good to see you again), J. Alexander (Miss Jay) and Tarina Tarantino (so nice to meet you!)! Even though I was sitting second row the pics didn’t come out that good, the lighting was pink and the models were too fast I was also too distracted from the show haha. But I didn’t forget to shoot my finale video, that part is essential! By far one of the best shows, Barbie’s first fashion show was a blast, it was the most energetic and fun show I’ve attended. It was lots of fun during the show and after in the backstage watching models peeling off hot pink press on nails and removing extreme eye makeup- hey being “plastic” is not that easy. Each guest received a Barbie doll, a box of chocolate and a Barbie book, all my Barbie memories came back- I used to own about 10 Barbies but gave all to my cousins as I got older.

And let me know which was your favorite look(s). And not to forget to mention the fabulous Barbie PINK Christian Louboutins, they were to eye candy!

TOP 10 POP CHRISTMAS ALBUMS OF ALL TIME

The best in pop Christmas albums. Top pop stars frequently record holiday songs or complete albums. These 10 are classics and the perfect place to start any holiday music collection.

1. Various Artists - 'A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector' (1963)
Courtesy Sony

At the peak of his success on the pop charts with his trademark "wall of sound" production technique, Phil Spector put together this Christmas collection by four of his top recording acts. The Crystals, Ronettes, Darlene Love, and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans each contributed their versions of mostly secular Christmas songs. The album had the misfortune of being released the same day as the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and was a relative failure upon initial release peaking at #13 on the album chart. However, over time it has been recognized as perhaps the top Christmas album and one of the top overall pop-rock albums of all time. Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is particularly revered.

2. Various Artists - 'A Very Special Christmas' (1987) Courtesy A&M

This was the first in a series of Christmas albums put together to benefit Special Olympics. The overall series has raised over $55 million for the cause. Artist Keith Haring contributed the cover art to this first collection. The overall project was overseen by producer Jimmy Iovine. The collection features a significant number of the top pop artists of the 1980's. Among the most celebrated recordings here are the Eurythmics "Winter Wonderland," Whitney Houston's"Do You Hear What I Hear?," Sting's "Gabriel's Message," and Run-D.M.C.'s "Christmas in Hollis."

3. Vince Guaraldi Trio - 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' (1965) Courtesy Fantasy

Lee Mendelson, producer of the A Charlie Brown Christmas TV special heard a recording of "Cast Your Fate to the Wind" by Vince Guaraldi's Trio while riding in a taxicab in San Francisco. Mendelson was put in touch with Guaraldi and he made the proposition that Vince Guaraldi create the score for the upcoming Peanuts special. The results were such a success that Guaraldi ended up composing scores for 16 Peanuts TV specials. Among the legendary songs created are "Linus and Lucy," "Christmas Time Is Here," and "Skating."

4. Josh Groban - 'Noel' (2007) Courtesy Reprise

Pop-classical singer Josh Groban had already released three multi-platinum top 10 albums before putting together Noel, his first Christmas collection in 2007. The result was the sleeper hit album of the year. It was produced by David Foster, known for his big pop productions with such stars as Whitney Houston and Celine Dion.Noel hit #1 on the pop album chart in the US seven weeks after its initial release. It became the first Christmas album to ever spend five weeks at #1 on the album chart. By the end of 2007, the album had sold over 3.5 million copies making it the biggest selling album of the year.

5. Mariah Carey - 'Merry Christmas' (1994) Courtesy Sony

Mariah Carey had released three multi-platinum albums and was riding high with the success of Music Box that spent eight weeks at #1 on the album chart and ultimately was certified ten times platinum when she decided to record a Christmas collection. Mariah Carey worked with a variety of producers, and, in the album's first run on the charts, it peaked at #3. The album includes the song "All I Want for Christmas Is You" which is considered a contemporary Christmas classic. It is the first holiday song to sell a million digital downloads.

6. Mannheim Steamroller - 'Mannheim Steamroller Christmas' (1984) Courtesy American Gramaphone

Producer and
composer Chip Davis first became known in the music industry for helping create the musical personality C.W. McCall for singer Bill Fries. C.W. McCall went all the way to #1 on the pop singles chart with the CB radio themed song "Convoy." Davis put together his own record label, American Gramaphone, to release a combination of classical music and light jazz under the pseudonym Mannheim Steamroller in 1975. The album was Fresh Aire and became one of the prototypes for new age music. In 1984 Mannheim Steamroller released this Christmas album, its first holiday collection, and found its true niche as a recording act. Mannheim Steamroller has now released eight platinum certified Christmas collections.

7. Elvis Presley - 'Elvis' Christmas Album' (1957) Courtesy RCA

Elvis Presley was the hottest recording artist in the US having released nine #1 singles and three #1 albums in two years when he put together his first Christmas album. The collection spent four weeks at the top of the album chart and, with sales of nine million copies, it is considered the bestselling Christmas album of all time in the US. Songwriter Irving Berlin stated that Elvis' recording of "White Christmas" was a profane parody of the song, and it was ordered off a number of radio stations. Elvis Presley's version of "Blue Christmas" on this album is considered a holiday classic.

8. Nat King Cole - 'The Christmas Song' (1963) Courtesy Capitol

Nat King Cole first recorded "The Christmas Song" in 1946. However, it is his 1961 recording that was later added to a holiday album of the same name that is best known. The song and album became even more popular following Cole's death from lung cancer in 1965.

9. Bing Crosby - 'White Christmas' (1945) Courtesy MCA

Bing Crosby's recording of the song "White Christmas" is considered the bestselling single of all time having sold over 50 million copies worldwide. This album was first put together in 1945 when it was released as 10 songs on five 78 rpm discs. The album was released as a standard vinyl LP for the first time in 1955. It has remained in print ever since and is considered the longest in-print album in the US except for the original cast recording of the musical Oklahoma!which was first released in 1943. The album first became available on compact disc in 1986.

10. The Carpenters - 'Christmas Portrait' (1978) Courtesy A&M Records

The Carpenters' popularity was definitely beginning to fade by the time they put together this first Christmas collection. They would only have one more top 40 pop hit after release of Christmas Portrait in 1978. This album includes the duo's classic "Merry Christmas, Darling." The album has sold over a million copies and today is one of the best loved Carpenters albums.

The Origins of Halloween and Guy Fawkes Day

Typical Halloween Pumpkin
Early practitioners of pagan religions (usually the Celts) often get credited as being the root source of our modern day Halloween.  But this is only partially true, as a great deal of the credit actually belongs to Christianity.

During the first century when Christianity began to spread across Europe, the Christian Church co-opted various Pagan holidays and practices because they were very popular with the population.  The decision to combine several pagan festival dates while giving them a Christian slant better enabled the transition from Paganism to Christianity.

The first holiday that would help make the Church make the transition was the widely practiced pagan holiday -  Lemuria which was held on May 13th.  It was believed that annually on this day, the dead would rise up from the grave and return as ghosts to haunt the living - unless they were placated which was done by pouring milk on their graves or offering them little cakes.  In 609 AD, the Church co-opted Lemuria and changed the name of the holiday to All Saints Day.   A day meant to honor the holiest of church saints.

The holiday was very successful, and the Roman church moved the date to November 1 and the adopted name of All Saints Day changed to All Hallows Day. The reason it was moved was for the purpose of "draining the life" of the Pagan holiday Samhain which fell on October 31.

The result of this move was that people began referring to Samhain as All Hallows Evening.  The name then shortened to All Hallows Even and eventually shortened to Halloween.  Taking a further step, the Church created a new holiday called All Souls Day on November 2nd which was the purpose of honoring all departed Christians.

The Church also gets credit for establishing the first Trick or Treating practice although it is not the same as the modern day Trick or Treating done by children today - but does share some resemblances.  The Catholic Church told its practitioners that many of their loved ones were not in Heaven or in Hell but stuck  in the middle in a place referred to as Purgatory.  The only way they would be granted entrance into Heaven, the Church told them, was to say enough Christian prayers for their souls so that they would rise up into Heaven.

Relatives of the dead began to seek anyone who would help say prayers to help their departed family members escape to Heaven.  The result of this was that Medieval beggars and poor people would go door to door, and for a small fee of a soul cake -  usually made up of flour, spices and raisins -  they would offer up prayers for the dead.  The significance of this tradition started by the Church is the basis for the references to death, dying, graveyards and other death-related elements found in our modern day Halloween.

Over time, the beggars became more rowdy and demanding for food and drink, and even took to wearing masks as to disguise their identities.  This further gave rise to unruly behavior and even destructive acts during Halloween night.  Over time, most of these traditions were found only in rural, country areas of Europe, and England.  But it was about to get a big boost in London.

Pro-Catholic terrorist Guy Fawkes and his conspirators
On November 5, 1605, Guy Fawkes, a pro-Catholic terrorist, attempted to blow up the House of Lords in what was known as the Gunpowder Plot.  Guido Fawkes was caught, tried, hung, and his body drawn and quartered, and his body parts were thrown into a large bonfire in front of cheering crowds.  Each year after that and even today, the tradition of bonfires and burning Guy Fawkes in effigy is repeated. This holiday is very close to Halloween, and many of the traditions of wearing masks, begging for treats, and celebrations carried over from Halloween.

As immigrants came to America, many of them brought with them the traditions of Halloween.  Since a large majority of the immigrants came from England, and were still British subjects, Guy Fawkes Day combined with Halloween practices took hold in the Colonies, and became adopted by all Colonists.

And as immigration extended beyond Protestant Englishmen, the Guy Fawkes holiday dissipated but Halloween grew.  As expected,  traditions morphed over time to our modern day American Halloween - Jack 'O Lanterns, Headless Horsemen, Ghosts and Goblins, and masks and candy.

Interestingly enough, over the last century, American traditions expanded outward and returned back to the place from which it came.  Although Guy Fawkes Day still remains a much larger holiday in England then Halloween, Halloween is still widely celebrated by children and adults alike.

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

A pampered teen convinces her wealthy father to renovate a dilapidated roller rink for her sweet 16 bash, only to have the party crashed by the serial killer who haunted their town ten years earlier. Madison Penrose (Julianna Guill) is pretty, popular, and partial to getting what she wants. With her 16th birthday fast approaching, Madison pleads with her father to stage the soiree at a run-down roller rink that was once home to notorious serial killer Charlie Rotter (Alex Van). It's been a decade since Charlie donned a mask and began systematically slaughtering the local teens, and his killing spree came to an abrupt end when his five-year-old daughter, Skye, caught him in the act and called the police. When the vehicle that was transporting Rotter to prison was decimated in a fiery crash, the locals thought they had seen the last of the psychotic, so-called the "Lord of the Rink."

Lost Technologies

http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Greek-Fire.gifGreek Fire
Perhaps the most famous of all lost technologies is what is known as Greek Fire, an incendiary weapon that was used by the military of the Byzantine Empire. A primitive form of napalm, Greek Fire was a kind of “sticky fire” that would continue burning even in water. The Byzantines most famously used it during the 11th century, when it was credited with helping to repel two sieges of Constantinople by Arab invaders. Greek Fire could be deployed in many different ways. In its earliest form it was poured into jars and thrown at enemies like a grenade or a Molotov cocktail. Later, giant bronze tubes were mounted on warships, and siphons were used spray the weapon at enemy vessels. There was even a kind of portable siphon that could be operated by hand in the style of a modern flamethrower.
How was it Lost?
The technology behind Greek Fire certainly isn’t completely alien. After all, modern militaries have now been using similar weapons for years. Still, the closest counterpart to Greek Fire, napalm, wasn’t perfected until the early 1940s, which would mean the technology was lost for several hundred years. The weapon’s use seems to disappear after the decline of the Byzantine Empire, but just why still isn’t known. Meanwhile, the possible chemical composition of Greek Fire has been widely studied by historians and scientists. An early theory was that the mixture included a heavy dose of saltpeter, which would make it chemically similar to gunpowder. This idea has since been rejected, because saltpeter wouldn’t burn in water. Instead, modern theories propose that the weapon was more likely a cocktail of petroleum and other chemicals, possibly including quicklime, niter, or sulfur.

http://www.ablogabouthistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/concrete.jpg
Roman Cement
Modern concrete was developed in the 1700s, and today the simple mixture of cement, water, sand, and rocks is the most widely used building material in the world. But the recipe developed in the 18th century wasn’t the first time concrete was invented. In fact, concrete was widely used throughout antiquity by the Persians, Egyptians, Assyrians, and Romans. The Romans in particular made extensive use of concrete, and they were responsible for first perfecting the recipe by mixing burnt lime with crushed rocks and water. Their mastery of its use allowed them to build many of their most famous structures, among them the Pantheon, the Colosseum, the aqueducts, and the Roman Baths.
How was it Lost?
Like so many technologies of the Greeks and Romans, the recipe for concrete was lost during the descent into the Dark Ages, but just why remains a mystery. The most popular theory is that the recipe was something of a trade secret among stonemasons, and that the method for making cement and concrete died along with those who knew it. Perhaps even more interesting than the disappearance of Roman cement are the particular qualities that separate it from more modern Portland cement, which is the most common type of cement used today. Structures built with Roman cement, like the Colosseum, have managed to weather thousands of years of punishment from the elements and remain standing, but buildings constructed with Portland cement have been known to wear down much faster. This has been theorized to be the result of different chemicals that the Romans added to their cement, among them milk and even blood. These were said to create air bubbles within the concrete that helped the material to expand and contract in the heat and cold without damaging itself.

http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Silphium.jpg
Silphium
Lost technologies aren’t always the result of too much secrecy or poor record keeping—sometimes nature just doesn’t cooperate. This was the case with Silphium, an herbal wonder drug that the Romans used as one of the earliest forms of birth control. It was based on the fruit of a particular genus of the fennel plant, a flowering herb that only grew along a certain shoreline in modern day Libya. The heart-shaped fruit of the Silphium plant was known to be something of a cure-all, and was used to treat warts, fever, indigestion and a whole host of other ailments. But it was Silphium’s powers as a contraceptive that made it one of the most valuable substances in the Roman world, to the point that the plant appears on several different pieces of ancient Roman currency. Women would drink Silphium juice every few weeks, and this would be enough to prevent pregnancy. Using the herb would even terminate an existing pregnancy if used correctly, which would make Silphium one of the earliest methods of abortion.
How was it Lost?
Silphium was one of the most sought after drugs of the ancient world, and its use spread rapidly across Europe and into Asia. But despite its remarkable effects, the particular genus of plant needed would only grow in one area along the Mediterranean in North Africa. Its scarcity, combined with an overwhelming demand, more than likely led to over harvesting, which drove the plant into extinction. Because the particular species no longer exists, modern scientists are unable to examine Silphium to see if its powers of contraception were really as effective as Roman historians and poets would lead one to believe, or if there were any adverse side effects. Still, it is worth noting that other herbs that are chemically similar to Silphium have been proven to have a fairly high rate of preventing pregnancy.

http://www.toptenz.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/Apollo-Space-Program.gif
Apollo / Gemini Space Program Technology
Not all lost technology dates back to antiquity—sometimes it’s just become so obsolete that it’s no longer compatible. The Apollo and Gemini space programs of the 50s, 60s, and 70s were responsible for NASA’s biggest successes, including some of the first manned space flights and the first trip to the moon. Gemini, which ran from 1965-66, was responsible for the much of the early research and development into the mechanics of human space flight. Apollo, which followed shortly thereafter, was launched with the goal of landing a crew on the surface of the moon, which it succeeded in doing in July of 1969.
How was it Lost?
The Apollo and Gemini programs aren’t truly lost. There are still one or two Saturn V rockets lying around, and there are plenty of parts from the spacecraft capsules still available. But just because modern scientists have the parts doesn’t mean they have the knowledge to understand how or why they worked the way they did. In fact, very few schematics or records from the original programs are still around. This lack of record keeping is a byproduct of the frenetic pace at which the American space program progressed. Because NASA was in a space race with the USSR, the planning, design, and building process of the Apollo and Gemini programs was always rushed. Not only that, but in most cases private contractors were brought in to work on every individual part of the spacecraft. Once the programs ended, these engineers—along with all their records—moved on. None of this would be a problem, but now that NASA is planning a return trip to the moon, a lot of the information about how the engineers of the 1960s made the voyages work is invaluable. Amazingly, the records remain so disorganized and incomplete that NASA has resorted to reverse engineering existing spacecraft parts that they have lying around in junkyards as a way of understanding just how the Gemini and Apollo programs managed to work so well.

Damascus Steel
Damascus steel was an impossibly strong type of metal that was widely used in the Middle East from 1100-1700 AD. It is most famously associated with swords and knives. Blades forged with Damascus steel were known for their amazing strength and cutting ability, and were said to be able to slice rocks and other metals—including the blades of weaker swords—cleanly in half. The blades are believed to have been created using wootz steel, which was most likely imported from India and Sri Lanka and molded and blended to create a patterned blade. The special quality of the swords is thought to have derived from this process, which weaved together tough cementite and soft iron to form a metal that was as strong as it was flexible.
How was it Lost?
The particular process for forging Damascus steel appears to have disappeared sometime around 1750 AD. The exact cause for the loss of the technique is unknown, but there are several theories. The most popular is that the supply of ores needed for the special recipe for Damascus steel started running low, and sword makers were forced to develop other techniques. Another is that the whole recipe for Damascus steel—specifically the presence of carbon nanotubes—was only discovered by accident, and that sword smiths didn’t actually know the technique by heart. Instead, they would simply forge the swords en masse, and test them to determine which met the standards of Damascus steel. Whatever the technique, Damascus steel is one technology that modern experimenters have been unable to fully reproduce. There are pattern welded knives that are marketed as being made from “Damascened steel”, but while usually well made, they are only approximations of the lost technique for real Damascus steel.
