This pedestrian bridge provides a safe crossing across the busy Newbridge Road in the south western suburb of Liverpool. This contemporary office building has been built on the edge of the ever expanding commercial area.

St Marys Road, pedestrian bridge

This pedestrian bridge links the Yurong Water Garden in Cook and Phillip Park with The Domain. It crosses over St Marys Road, at the intersection with Riley Street, Yurong Parkway and Sir John Young Crescent. The apartment blocks and hotels in the distance are located and Kings Cross and the large one on the right is the Horizon Apartments block at Darlinghurst.

Darling Harbour, The Millennium Athlete

This week Sydney has been celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Summer Olympic Games, which opened on the 15 September 2000. This steel sculpture of the logo sits outside the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre at Darling Harbour, which was one of the venue sites. The plaque explains the story behind it: “The Millennium Athlete” logo for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, was unveiled on 14 September 1996 by some of our greatest Olympians. This sculpture represents the promise made in Sydney’s Olympic bid to host the Games that would be dedicated to the athletes of the world. The running athlete symbolises, the spirit of Sydney, the Olympic torch bearer and Australia’s indigenous culture. The twelve metre mast supports nearly two tonnes of steel suspended six metres above the ground on a total of 120 metres of special high-tensile woven steel cable.

Millers Point, bridges

The Windmill Street Bridge and the Munn Street Bridge over Hickson Road at Millers Point. The road was cut out of the sandstone cliff to provide a link between the wharves on Walsh Bay and those being built at Darling Harbour, requiring these bridges to be built in 1910.

Botany, pond

Mill Pond is part of the wetland area in the southern suburb of Botany. The clouds were reflected beautifully in the pond on this day. This view is from Botany Road, looking towards the elevated Southern Cross Drive and underpasses. The view in the opposite direction can be seen here.

Macquarie Street, The Macquarie Arch

The Macquarie Arch (left) was installed at the end of Macquarie Street, as part of Macquarie Visions during the Vivid Sydney Festival. The illuminated arch symbolises the road over the Blue Mountains, which was one of Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s visions and a great achievement. St James Anglican Church, which is an example of the architectural work in the Macquarie period, can be seen here through the arch (right).

Dawes Point, artwork (Theme Day: Red)

 This is not an April Fools Day joke. This piece of artwork (above) in the middle of a roundabout is located in Hickson Road at Dawes Point. I thought this poor little red car crushed by a boulder was a perfect selection for the red theme day and I also managed to capture a red mini passing the roundabout. The artist, Jimmie Durham, created "Still Life With Stone and Car" in 2004. The work is only a 'stones throw' away from the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Pier One. If you a closer look in the background you can see one of the yellow signs here that read "Artwork Ahead" and "End Artwork" (below), in the style of the signs around the city that usually say "Roadwork Ahead" and "End Roadwork". This is known as "Artwork", created by Richard Tipping in 2004.

Tom Uglys Bridge

Tom Uglys Bridge carries the Princes Highway over the Georges River. People were amused by the name of this bridge a few weeks ago, when I mentioned that it was in the distance of one of my sunset shots, so I took a few shots up close last week on a partly cloudy day. I explained the origins of the curious name "Tom Uglys" in my post yesterday. This view includes the northbound lanes on the 1937 truss bridge, the pedestrian walkway and one of the pylons. I was standing at the southernmost point of Blakehurst, looking south towards Sylvania.

Undercliffe, Turella Reserve, motorway stack

This controversial exhaust stack for M5 motorway tunnel is located in Turrella Reserve at Undercliffe, beside Wolli Creek. It's quite an ugly structure on the skyline but with the fading light at dusk, even the ugliest structures can sometimes look good. The tall apartment blocks at nearby Wolli Creek can be seen in the distance.

Moore Park, Eastern Distributor, traffic island garden

A few weeks ago, I noticed the installation of a couple of unusual planter boxes on the traffic islands at Moore Park (above), at the intersection of Cleveland Street and South Dowling Street, which is part of the Eastern Distributor. The planters were created by splitting a small car in two. I thought this was an innovative and adventurous installation by the local council. It turns out, the local council wasn’t responsible but it was actually part of a new reality television, gardening makeover show called Guerrilla Gardeners, where they spruce up certain parts of the city that they feel have been neglected. It is an interesting concept that has created controversy with local councils because the gardeners do not obtain their permission and also because show highlights the council’s neglect. The media has been reporting about councils preventing them from completing their work or altering them once completed but locals seem to support them. The installation here is an improvement but unfortunately, without regular maintainenance, it's already starting to look a bit neglected compared to what it looked like at the start.

North Strathfield, Australia the movie

'Australia' is the epic movie that was released in November, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The movie stars well known Australian actors Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman and newcomer, young Brandon Walters, who practically steals the movie. David Wenham, Bryan Brown and David Gulpilil are also in the cast. This week, 'Australia' became the third biggest Australian movie in Australian box-office history. A huge billboard advertising the film sits in a prominent position at North Strathfield, in between the M4 Motorway and Parramatta Road.

Moore Park, South Dowling Street, Eastern Distributor

South Dowling Street is part of the Eastern Distributor in the inner city suburb of Moore Park.

Arncliffe, Princes Highway

The Princes Highway is a major arterial road in the southern suburbs. Here are two views of the highway at Arncliffe. The top view is looking north towards the Sydney city skyline, beside Arncliffe Hotel. The bottom view is looking south towards Rockdale, with the footbridge between Arncliffe Public School and St Xaviers Catholic School.
