Dawes Point, Ives Steps Wharf

Ives Steps Wharf is located beside Pier One at Dawes Point, looking out on Sydney Harbour. The infamous Billy Blue operated a regular passenger boat service from Dawes Point across the harbour to Blues Point from 1830. The boat dock was approximately where the Ives Steps Wharf is now, but at that time it was called Waterman's Steps. They were renamed after Alderman Isaac Ellis Ives around 1896.

Hyde Park, garden

The remnants of a heritage listed underground public toilet is located at Hyde Park, along Park Street close to the corner of Elizabeth Street. Built in 1909, it has now been dicommissioned and filled with sand, which preserves it and allows for reuse in the future. The features above ground such as the the lamp post on a sandstone plinth and wrought iron stairway fences have been incorporated into the garden beds.

Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, wall

The retaining walls at Ballast Point Park at Birchgrove are made up of rubble and recycled material encased in a wire frame, from the buildings on this former oil refinery site. If you look closely, you can see that this wall features engraved padlocks. The padlocks are locked by romantics to preserve their everlasting love, with the key thrown into Sydney Harbour. The tradition seems to have originated in Italy, where couples attached padlocks to the Ponte Vecchio Bridge in Florence and threw the keys into the river. The Sydney city skyline can be seen in the distance, across the harbour.

Kogarah, St George Hospital

The Australian flag flies at St George Hospital in the southern suburb of Kogarah. The building is not remarkable but I was fascinated by this retro sign, with the raised lettering and logo, on this refurbished building facing Belgrave Street. I've been spending some time here recently for physiotherapy to mobilise my leg again, following an accident a couple of months ago.

Botanic Gardens, Memory Is Creation Without End

This art work is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens between Macquarie Street, the Cahill Expressway and the Northern Depot Gate. “Memory Is Creation Without End” by Kimio Tsuchiya was created in 2000 and installed as part of the City of Sydney's Sculpture Walk program. It features sandstone blocks which are relics of demolished buildings symbolising the circular connection of past, present, and future. This perspective shows the proximity of office buildings in the central business district to the botanic gardens.

Circular Quay, Vivid Sydney, bench

As part of the Vivid Sydney festival, this bench has been installed on the Circular Quay foreshore, leading up to the Sydney Opera House. The artwork is called "C/C" and is created by Singapore's Angela Chong. It is illuminated at night with low energy, colour changing LED lights. I thought it was worth photographing during the day because it has such a spectacular backdrop. It's a shame the view was partly blocked by the hoarding around the escalators which are being repaired.

Circular Quay, Vivid Sydney, forecourt

This was the view of Circular Quay and the Sydney skyline from the Sydney Opera House last night. Vivid Sydney is a festival of light, music and ideas which this year runs from 25th May to 13th June. Some buildings in the city have been lit up with coloured light projections. The lamps along the Circular Quay foreshore have been coloured blue and pink and produce some wonderful reflections here on the Opera House forecourt.

Toongabbie, Portico Park

Portico Park is located in the western suburb of Toongabbie. This walkway, with this tall lamp as a centre piece, links the railway station with the shopping centre. The name Toongabbie is derived from an Aboriginal word, reported as meaning 'place by the water or the meeting of the waters'. The name was used by early European settlers from 1792 after Governor Arthur Phillip asked the local Aborigines what they called this area.

Pyrmont, lamp and bench

This lamp, tiered bench and decorative pergola are located at the Pyrmont end of the pedestrian walkway on the Anzac Bridge. I chose this photo to highlight Earth Hour, an annual event to to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change. Participants switch off lights and electrical equipment for one hour at 8.30pm on the last Saturday of March. Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007 with approximately 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses taking part. It has grown every year and spread across the world, with 4,000 cities and 128 countries involved in 2010.

Woolloomooloo Bay, Queen Mary 2

The Queen Mary 2 is the luxury ocean liner that was berthed at Garden Island dockyard yesterday. This view is from the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf in Woolloomooloo Bay. It made a grand entrance into Sydney Harbour on Tuesday morning, with its sister ship the Queen Elizabeth. The skies were a glorious blue, compared to the dreary grey skies we had the day before. What a difference a day makes.

St Marys Road, pedestrian bridge

This pedestrian bridge links the Yurong Water Garden in Cook and Phillip Park with The Domain. It crosses over St Marys Road, at the intersection with Riley Street, Yurong Parkway and Sir John Young Crescent. The apartment blocks and hotels in the distance are located and Kings Cross and the large one on the right is the Horizon Apartments block at Darlinghurst.

Wollstonecraft, railway station

Wollstonecraft Railway Station opened in 1893, when the North Shore railway line was extended south from St Leonards to Milsons Point. While this station may not be remarkeable, it does feature an interesting large station identification sign on the platform, one of the last surviving signs of this type in Sydney. The suburb is named after Edward Wollstonecraft, who was granted land here in 1825.

Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf, boardwalk

The Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf on Wooloomooloo Bay is the largest timbered-piled building in the world. The wharf and warehouse building were originally completed in 1915. This area was a working port until the 1970s. The wharf was redeveloped in the 1990s into a hotel, apartments, restaurants and marina. This boardwalk linked to the wharf by these little bridges provides an extended walkway.

This boardwalk on Wolloomooloo Bay provides a link from Wolloomooloo to The Domain. In the background is the Garden Island dockyard on Sydney Harbour, which is the home port for the naval fleet.

Pyrmont Bridge, monorail station

The Harbourside monorail station at Darling Harbour is located beside this pylon and lamp of Pyrmont Bridge. The Sydney monorail connects the city with Darling Harbour and Chinatown. Sydney Tower can be seen reflected in the glass of the monorail station.

Endeavour Bridge

Endeavour Bridge carries General Holmes Drive across the Cooks River between Mascot and Kyeemagh, close to Botany Bay. It is named after the HMB Endeavour, the ship commanded by Captain James Cook, an English explorer, navigator and cartographer. The crew of the Endeavour arrived in Botany Bay in 1770 and was the first recorded European expedition to navigate and map the eastern coastline of Australia.
