Over the last couple of weeks I have been featuring sculptures at the annual Sculpture by the Sea exhibition. This curious sculpture at the entrance to the exhibition was not actually one of the exhibits but a clever, or rather, sneaky promotion. The "Hello Sydney" number plate features an email address which is also inscribed on the 'artwork'. Once you visit the website, you realise this 'sculpture' was actually an advertisement for a new car, which is about to be launched.

Leichhardt, advertising (Theme Day: Funny Signs)

 There's nothing like truth in advertising or in this case the motto of a furniture shop: Butt Ugly Blokes Building Handsome Furniture For Beautiful People. The furniture shop is called 'Three of a Kind Store' and is located on Parramatta Road, in the inner west suburb of Leichhardt. This is the back laneway delivery entrance to the shop and the sign is on the side street, which can be seen from the man road. I took this photo a while ago but didn't find a good reason to post it, until this theme day gave me a perfect excuse.

Ramsgate Beach, supermarket at Easter

In an effort to find a photo around Sydney with an Easter theme, I noticed that people in Australia make such an effort to decorate everything for Christmas but barely do anything for Easter. The best I could find is this over the top commercial attempt to convince everyone that the hunt for Easter value is over at their supermarket at Ramsgate Beach. I thought the giant Easter egg on the roof might be good for skywach too.

Customs House Square, advertisement

This Volkswagen kombi is being used for a promotion at Quay Bar, an outdoor bar in Customs House Square, near the tigers featured yesterday. The kombi van became a major counterculture symbol during the hippie era. Many featured hand-painted or air-brushed murals that made a statement about the era with their brilliant art work. At first, I thought this was an inspired art creation to celebrate Chinese New Year, in the Year of the Tiger based on an idea borrowed from an idyllic time, but then I realised this was actually just another way for a corporation to advertise a product, in his case a brand of beer.

North Strathfield, Australia the movie

'Australia' is the epic movie that was released in November, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The movie stars well known Australian actors Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman and newcomer, young Brandon Walters, who practically steals the movie. David Wenham, Bryan Brown and David Gulpilil are also in the cast. This week, 'Australia' became the third biggest Australian movie in Australian box-office history. A huge billboard advertising the film sits in a prominent position at North Strathfield, in between the M4 Motorway and Parramatta Road.

Sharpie's Golf House

Sharpie's Golf House is an unremarkeable shop at Surry Hills near Central Railway Station. However, it features a remarkeable neon sign above it that has become a Sydney landmark. For decades, train commuters out of the city at night have seen the golfer sinking the golf balls in the hole here.
