Sylvania, Georges River, sunset

The sun sets over the southern suburb of Sylvania with a glowing reflection across the Georges River. This view was from the Captain Cook Bridge at Sans Souci last weekend.

Tom Uglys Bridge

Tom Uglys Bridge carries the Princes Highway over the Georges River. People were amused by the name of this bridge a few weeks ago, when I mentioned that it was in the distance of one of my sunset shots, so I took a few shots up close last week on a partly cloudy day. I explained the origins of the curious name "Tom Uglys" in my post yesterday. This view includes the northbound lanes on the 1937 truss bridge, the pedestrian walkway and one of the pylons. I was standing at the southernmost point of Blakehurst, looking south towards Sylvania.

Tom Uglys Bridge (Theme Day: Contrast)

Tom Uglys Bridge crosses the Georges River between the suburbs of Blakehurst and Sylvania. The truss span (top) which opened in 1929 is quite a contrast to the duplicated box girder span (bottom) which opened in 1987. When the original bridge was built, it was known as the Georges River Bridge, but was renamed to distinguish between the various bridges on the river following the opening of the Captain Cook Bridge in 1965 and the Alfords Point Bridge in 1973. Tom Uglys Bridge took its name from the southernmost part of Blakehurst, known as Tom Uglys Point, which is believed to be named after local resident Tom Huxley and transformed by the mispronunciation by local Aborigines.

Georges River, sunset

I captured this sunset over the Georges River last weekend from a wharf at Sans Souci. The sun is dropping down towards Tom Uglys Bridge, which links the southern suburbs of Blakehurst and Sylvania.

Sylvania, Georges River

These waterfront homes are on the Georges River, in the southern suburb of Sylvania. We've had a couple of rainy weeks in Sydney but even when it's overcast, the river can still look quite picturesque.

Kangaroo Point, Georges River, sunset

After a perfectly sunny day, the clouds rolled in to produce a glorious sunset. This view is from Blakehurst, close to Tom Uglys Bridge, looking over the Georges River towards the suburbs of Sylvania and Kangaroo Point.
