The Domain, Sphinxes

These two sphinxes sit on either side of the pathway opposite the Art Gallery of New South Wales, along Art Gallery Road at The Domain. The sphinx in Greek mythology was a creature with the body of a lion and the head of a woman. These sculptures are bronze casts of the two original sandstone sphinxes that sat near the swings on the eastern side of Art Gallery Road for many years. The bronze casts were commissioned by the Friends of The Botanic Gardens and unveiled here in 1997.

Kensington, University of New South Wales, Uniwalk

The University of New South Wales is the second biggest university in Sydney. Uniwalk is located at the entrance of the university on Anzac Parade, in the eastern suburb of Kensington.

Waterloo, shops

This wide footpath is located in front of shops along Botany Road, in the inner city suburb of Waterloo. It's typical of a traditional suburban shopping centre with a fruit shop, coffee shop, bakery, supermarket seen here and even a payphone. The suburb of Waterloo took its name from the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, when Allied and Prussian forces under the Duke of Wellington and Blücher defeated the French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte.

The Rocks, Argyle Cut, bridge

This bridge (top), which sits above the Argyle Cut in The Rocks, carries a roadway, railway, walkway and cycleway from the central business district to the Sydney Harbour Bridge. The Argyle Cut was hewn out of the sandstone ridge of The Rocks to connect Sydney Cove with Darling Harbour and Millers Point. It was started in 1843 by convicts with hammers and chisels but was not completed until 1859 with the use of city council labour and explosives. "Argyle Cut", created by Mark Dyson, was a geometric pattern of lights displayed on the historic arch (bottom) as part of the Vivid Sydney festival.

Botanic Gardens, Farm Cove

This bench in the Royal Botanic Gardens provides a good view of Farm Cove on Sydney Harbour. The seawall surrounding it is constructed of large sandstone blocks. It is bordered by a pedestrian walkway that runs from the Sydney Opera House through the Royal Botanic Gardens to the Domain parklands and Mrs Macquarie's Chair. Before the Europeans arrived, Farm Cove was called Woccanmagully by the Aboriginal people and the area was an important ceremonial site. After Europeans arrived in 1788, it became the site of the colony’s first farm, although not very successful because the soil in the Farm Cove area proved to be infertile.

Alexandria, Sydney Park, wetlands

Sydney Park, in the inner city suburb of Alexandria, features a number of ponds and wetlands that attract many animals and birds. The site is a former brickworks that has been transformed into 44 hectares of parkland. This boardwalk extends into one of the ponds at the southern end of the park. The typical Autumn day started out with a warm sunny morning but ended up with a cool overcast afternoon.

Pyrmont, lamp and bench

This lamp, tiered bench and decorative pergola are located at the Pyrmont end of the pedestrian walkway on the Anzac Bridge. I chose this photo to highlight Earth Hour, an annual event to to raise awareness of the need to take action on climate change. Participants switch off lights and electrical equipment for one hour at 8.30pm on the last Saturday of March. Earth Hour started in Sydney in 2007 with approximately 2.2 million people and 2,100 businesses taking part. It has grown every year and spread across the world, with 4,000 cities and 128 countries involved in 2010.

Surry Hills, stack

This chimney stack rises above a former industrial building in the inner city suburb of Surry Hills. It dominates the skyline behind Shannon Reserve and is much taller than the chimney stacks on the residential terrace houses beside it. Surry Hills is a suburb that once contained a lot of heavy industry and manufacturing but has gone through gentrificaton, with many of the old buildings redeveloped. This stack is redundant now since the building is used for residential and commercial purposes.

Banksia, foot bridge

This foot bridge runs along the railway line, immediately north of Banksia railway station. This rusty steel and weathered timber bridge is another structure on the endangered list and will soon be extinct. Signs have been posted here to announce that it will be demolished soon but a new one will not be built in its place. In future, pedestrians will have to walk a short distance away to cross the road at ground level. I suppose it's not architecturally significant or historically important so it's not worth restoring or replacing but it's a shame because this old bridge has some character.

Cronulla, Wanda Beach

The walkway leads down to Wanda Beach, the northernmost patrolled beach of the southern suburb of Cronulla. Vegetation has been grown behind the beach to protect the sand dunes and the fences prevent beachgoers from damaging them.

Bondi, Sculpture by the Sea

Such Sweet Thunder by Richard Heinrich, USA

Sculpture by the Sea is an annual exhibition which is located on the coastal walk from Bondi to Tamarama. This sculpture was located at a fork in the walkway at Bondi, with a terrific backdrop of the Pacific Ocean under light wisps of clouds in the sky.

Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf, boardwalk

The Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf on Wooloomooloo Bay is the largest timbered-piled building in the world. The wharf and warehouse building were originally completed in 1915. This area was a working port until the 1970s. The wharf was redeveloped in the 1990s into a hotel, apartments, restaurants and marina. This boardwalk linked to the wharf by these little bridges provides an extended walkway.

Woolloomooloo, boardwalk

This boardwalk on Wolloomooloo Bay provides a link from Wolloomooloo to The Domain. In the background is the Garden Island dockyard on Sydney Harbour, which is the home port for the naval fleet.

Cockatoo Island, walkway

This walkway along the northern shore of Cockatoo Island is punctuated by trees and benches. The rusty steel benches are a reminder of the shipbuilding history of Cockatoo Island and provide views of the Parramatta River and the nearby northern suburb of Woolwich.

Rhodes, flats

This walkway along the shore of Homebush Bay and in front of blocks of flats is in the inner west suburb of Rhodes. This is another suburb along the Parramatta River that was once an industrial area but has been redeveloped into a residential and commercial area in recent years. The suburb was named after a property on the peninsula that was demolishd in 1919 to build flour mills. Heavy industry in the suburb included a foundry, manufacturing iron pipes from 1911 and a number of chemical manufacturers from 1930.

Alexandria, Sydney Park wetlands

Sydney Park is a large inner city recreational area in Alexandria. It features a number of ponds and wetlands that attract many animals and birds. This is a view (top) of the pond in the south-east corner of the park. A Little Black Cormorant, also known as a Shag, is seen here sunning its wings (bottom), while its mate enjoys the view from the boardwalk.

Point Piper, Redleaf Pool

 A view of the blocks of flats in the eastern suburb of Point Piper from the boardwalk around Redleaf Pool at Double Bay.

Brighton-Le-Sands, boardwalk and pavilion

This boardwalk beside the beach at Botany Bay, is in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands. It was a beautiful day for a walk or a bike ride along the bay, to take advantage of the blue sky.
