Millers Point, Walsh Bay

Walsh Bay is on Sydney Harbour, stretching between Dawes Point and Millers Point. This view of the wharves and Sydney skyline is from a ferry on the harbour. Pier 8 and Pier 9 of the Walsh Bay wharves, were originally part of Sydney's port facilities. The old warehouses on the wharves here have been redeveloped into commercial and residential spaces.

Gold Fields House

Gold Fields House is a commercial office building at 1 Alfred Street, between Pitt Street and George Street, at Circular Quay. This 25 storey building was one of the city's earliest high rise office buildings, constructed in 1966. With spectacular views of Sydney Harbour, approval has been granted for it to be soon redeveloped into apartments. This view is from the walkway beside the Cahill Expressway.

King Street Wharf, sculpture

This contemporary sculpture is located at the end of King Street Wharf, near Barangaroo. It's part of a matching pair, with other one located nearby but closer to the wharves, which can be seen here. In the background are a number of newer office buildings, including No.1 Shelley Street and Westpac Place.

Botanic Gardens, Woolloomooloo Gate, fountain

A pair of these simple fountains sit outside the Woolloomooloo Gate of the Royal Botanic Gardens, along Mrs Macquaries Drive. The gate was originally built in 1873 as the main southern entrance to The Domain. It was moved during the construction of the Cahill Expressway to its present position and became known as the Woolloomooloo Gate because it overlooks the suburb of Woolloomooloo.

Botanic Gardens, Memory Is Creation Without End

This art work is located in the Royal Botanic Gardens between Macquarie Street, the Cahill Expressway and the Northern Depot Gate. “Memory Is Creation Without End” by Kimio Tsuchiya was created in 2000 and installed as part of the City of Sydney's Sculpture Walk program. It features sandstone blocks which are relics of demolished buildings symbolising the circular connection of past, present, and future. This perspective shows the proximity of office buildings in the central business district to the botanic gardens.

Botanic Gardens, Pyramid Glasshouse

The Sydney Tropical Centre in the Royal Botanic Gardens, comprises of this Pyramid glasshouse and the Arc Glasshouse. The Deutshe Bank Place building is the skyscraper that rises in the background.

Botanic Gardens, Arc Glasshouse

The Sydney Tropical Centre in the Royal Botanic Gardens, comprises of this Arc Glasshouse and the Pyramid glasshouse. The Arc was opened in 1990 with a linking underground foyer to the Pyramid Glasshouse which had been opened in 1972. Both glass structures house displays of tropical plants. The glass office buildings rising in the background are located along Phillip Street or Macquarie Street.

AMP Building, Alfred Street

The AMP Building is a skyscraper in Alfred Street, close to Circular Quay. This was Sydney's first highrise to take advantage of the lifting of the 46 metre (150 feet) height limit which was enforced until 1957. Built in 1962, it is 115 metres tall and dominated the city's skyline for many years. It originally had a rooftop observation deck at 106 metres high.

AMP Building, sculpture (Theme Day: Perspective)

"Amicus Certus" is a sculpture created by Tom Bass in 1960 which is located on the side of the AMP building on Alfred Street. The full motto of the Australian Mutual Provident Society is "amicus certus in re incerta" which means "a sure friend in an uncertain event". This perspective gives a view of the entrance and also a sense of the curve of the building's facade.

Balmain East, Sydney Water Police

The Sydney Water Police has its base at Camerons Cove, in the inner west suburb of Balmain East. It comprises of the Marine Command Area complex and marina. It was built in 2005, replacing facilities in Pyrmont. It has a spectacular backdrop of the Sydney skyline.

Millers Point, wharf

A sunset view of Pier 9 at Walsh Bay, in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The Walsh Bay wharves were originally part of Sydney's port facilities but have now been converted into theatres, offices, hotels, apartments, restaurants, cafes and shops. The office buildings seen in the distance are at North Sydney.

Liverpool, bridge

This pedestrian bridge provides a safe crossing across the busy Newbridge Road in the south western suburb of Liverpool. This contemporary office building has been built on the edge of the ever expanding commercial area.

Sydney Town Hall, York Street

This side view of the Sydney Town Hall is from York Street. In the bacground of this sandstone heritage bulding are contemorary skyscrapers the HSBC Centre on George Street and Lumiere in Bathurst Street. This view of the town hall is improved in Winter when the trees have dropped all their leaves.

Pyrmont, Jones Bay Wharf

A view of Jones Bay Wharf, in the inner city suburb of Pyrmont, with Barangaroo and the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the distance. Jones Bay Wharf consists of Piers 19-21 of Pyrmont Wharves. This marina on Jones Bay sits beside Pier 21. The wharf and warehouse buildings were originally built in 1919, as part of Sydney's port facilities. After those port facilities were relocated to Port Botany, the buildings were redeveloped in 2003 into commercial space.

Balmain East, Mort Bay

This view across Mort Bay to Balmain East and the Sydney city skyline in the background is from Ballast Point at Birchgrove. The Borrowdale is a First Fleet Class ferry, which is part of the Sydney Ferries fleet. It's seen here travelling past Simmons Point Reserve and a private marina, heading towards the Balmain ferry wharf.

Circular Quay, Vivid Sydney, bench

This artwork was installed on the Circular Quay foreshore, as part of the Vivid Sydney festival. "C/C" is a futuristic and functional sculpture created by Singapore's Angela Chong. It is made from acrylic sheets fashioned into a public bench, illuminated by night with low energy, colour changing LED lights. The shots from the front have the Sydney Opera House as a backdrop, while those from behind look out towards Circular Quay and the city skyline. I featured a daytime shot of this artwork here.

Circular Quay, Vivid Sydney

Circular Quay and the Sydney skyline illuminated for the annual Vivid Sydney festival which runs until this Monday night. These are just some of the colours featured in "Skyscraper Illuminati" created by 32 Hundred Lighting but there are also quite a few animated designs this year which are difficult to photograph. This view is from the Overseas Passenger Terminal looking towards the Circular Quay ferry wharves and Circular Quay railway station, rising up to the city skyscrapers.
