Arncliffe, sewer vent

This tall sewer vent dominates the skyline at West Botany Street in the southern suburb of Arncliffe. It was constructed at the turn of the 20th century as part of the Western Outfall Sewer. By the late 1800s, the five outfall sewers which drained into Sydney Harbour had grossly polluted it. As replacements, the Southern Outfall Sewer was constructed in 1886 including an experimental sewage farm, followed by the Bondi Ocean Outfall Sewer in 1889 and the Western Suburbs Outfall Sewer in 1898. These outfalls still serve the city today, south of the harbour. Sewer vents introduce a flow of fresh air through sewers to reduce the production of noxious and corrosive gases by enabling their release.

Arncliffe railway station, dust storm

It's been a week since we had the biggest dust storm in 70 years but I had one more photo of Arncliffe railway station to share from that day.

Arncliffe, pre-school

This pre-school building on the corner of Forest Road and Farrar Street in the southern suburb of Arncliffe was originally the Arncliffe Fire Station, built in 1909 in the Federation architectural style. Farrar Street was then known as Gordon Street. The fire station closed in 1945 when duties were transferred to Rockdale Fire Station, which had opened in 1938. A new Arncliffe Fire Station was built in West Botany Street in 2006.

With Daylight Saving extended to the end of March now, this gave me opportunities to witness some beautiful sunrises on the way to work. Here is Arncliffe Railway Station a couple of days ago, just before 7am. You can see what the station looks like in the afternoon here. Tomorrow night, an international event called Earth Hour at 8.30pm raises awareness of the need to take action on climate change. More about that tomorrow.

Fairview (left) and Belmont (right) are both located on the same block of Wollongong Road. The street behind these houses is called Fairview Street, named after this estate. Athelstane was another home built in the same style and era. That home was unfortunately demolished and the estate was used to house Athelstane Public School. Athelstane Avenue was also named after that estate.

Arncliffe Fire Station, located on West Botany Street close to the Wickham Street intersection, was built in 2006. It replaced Rockdale Fire Station, built in 1938, which itself replaced the original Arncliffe Fire Station on the corner of Forest Road and Farrar Street, built in 1909.

The Arncliffe Returned and Services League (RSL) Club (left) is on Wollongong Road, beside Arncliffe Park. The Arncliffe Community Centre (right) is on Barden Street and includes Coronation Hall.

St George School Education Office

The St George School Education Office is on Segenhoe Street, beside Arncliffe Public School.

Arncliffe, Princes Highway

The Princes Highway is a major arterial road in the southern suburbs. Here are two views of the highway at Arncliffe. The top view is looking north towards the Sydney city skyline, beside Arncliffe Hotel. The bottom view is looking south towards Rockdale, with the footbridge between Arncliffe Public School and St Xaviers Catholic School.
