E for... English !

I’ve completed my entire school education in the same institution…for which I take credit (I don’t know how the school sees it)…anyway, the full sentences I write in English these days, with or without errors, are wholly attributed to this school and to my English teachers (and Microsoft Word spell check).

‘Talk in English within the school premises’ – was a discipline of this highly established Convent school, and this made us first grade inherent chatterboxes remarkably reserved and insecure. Hmm. Already we were busy with other routine activities like wasting lunch, losing pencils and other stationery, and tearing paper from text books(of other students, of course). Now see what a burden had befallen us. At 60, the Principal had nothing to lose to execute a discipline like this. But she did have something to lose. Her image. Once one of my English retarded friends wished her ‘Good Morning’- in the evening…and she also graciously returned her a good morning! So we aren’t talking about anyone’s image here anymore.

During our primary school days the struggle was topped with embarrassment. Although our parents were well versed in English, we spoke in Malayalam at home. So, one can equate ‘talk in English’ = ‘stop talking’. This eventually resulted in comparatively calm classrooms, and the class leader would have limited or no job, much to the delight of teachers.  This was a period when passing of messages in folded papers was invented. This enabled free and full fledged communication between us friends, in Malayalam. Later, full notebooks were attributed for this purpose! But remember, all this happens within my circle of friends only; class leaders and studious girls were carefully avoided. Papa had advised me not to be in the company of bad girls, you know?

As we grew older, the ‘talk in English’ rule was prevalent, but we dint care anymore. This was a time when we had become fully grown brats and walked the corridors with heads up, and both hands in pocket… even when a teacher passes by. The same teachers at whose very sight, once upon a time, we used to wish, bowing our heads so low with humility and respect, that after she leaves we get a head rush and can’t see anything for the next few seconds. But the good thing was that all the English grammar, poetry, short stories, and the articles in the Hindu newspaper which was forced on us by parents, had borne fruit. But then the Indian Council of Secondary Education dint like what had happened; they dropped a bomb called 'Merchant of Venice' on us in the tenth grade.

Shakespeare lessons rewrote all our fundamental concepts of English grammar. ‘Aside’ and ‘Soliloquy’ became the order of the day. Oh my…and the turtle pace at which the ‘Merchant of Venice’ classes were going…! One paragraph or four lines in an hour!

Hidden meanings + Most likely other meanings + literal meaning + what the critics of the 16th century thought + what Shakespeare meant + what we are supposed to infer = five 200-page notebooks for Merchant of Venice.  It’s likely that Antonio and Portia wouldn’t have been aware of a sea of meanings attached to their casual conversations. Or maybe they meant something else. Ah who cares? We want marks.

Essay type questions demanded original Shakespearean sentences to be reproduced in answer sheets with quotations marks. And the teacher enlightened my friend N that ‘Even if you don’t quote, please don’t misquote’. So the bad news was that, we are not supposed to write our own sentences, beautify them with ‘thou art’, ‘Thine’ etc, topped with semicolons, commas and tildes, enclose them within quotation marks and expect teachers to award marks. They actually read these. Sigh.

Anyway our teachers, in the days when Google was not so popular, gathered enough information from the British Library to change our lives from miserable to pathetic. How we all overcame it all without tainting the image of our then teacher is another feat, and I hereby dedicate it to the sweat, BP pills, prayers, hypertension and support of our parents. *bowing head in gratitude*.

But the battle was not over yet! Picture abhi baaki hai mere dost ! HAMLET happened!

Shakespeare’s Hamlet began in the 11th grade with a conversation of the ghost of Late King Hamlet. The characters which were living had already done enough damage. If a Shakespearean character had to appear after death, it means that it had something earth shattering to say. God what on earth did this guy miss to say during his lifetime, I wonder! We’d be immensely grateful if this ghost silently murdered an existing complex character. But this was no ordinary ghost. It went on to utter a few passages which made integration, differentiation, and Physics theorems look like nursery rhymes. Misery and more misery awaited us.

That’s when she came. Our new English teacher, Ms.Lakshmi.

She had big expressive eyes, and an unbeatably excellent vocabulary. Her style of speaking English…mode of teaching…and how she loved and enjoyed what she taught…was definitely a class apart. Sometimes we even felt the urge to make mental notes of her casual conversations! Oh for the impact she made! It was so perfect. Come what may, we never missed her classes...not even me. Well, if a teacher can keep people like me engaged in a subject for an hour then I needn’t explain any further. She made us realize how we Indians had customized the sound and pronunciation of certain words to our convenience…and ventured out of her way to teach us how it really had to be pronounced. Wow. She could read the confusion in our eyes and the wrinkles on our foreheads. She captured our concentration with smiles and not frowns. She talked, and did not scream. And finally, she walked us through Hamlet like a dream… and one of the many things I miss about school are these Hamlet classes. We virtually watched the entire play of Hamlet unfold before us…the effervescent voice, and the expressions that kept changing on her face. Live. And that’s how we loved English. And why we still do.

Thank you, teacher…because of you, I have a blog today.

Puppy Without Ears Doing Well In Foster Care

The puppy who survived the exclusion of its ears in a recent attack has found a foster home, according to San Diego County animal control officers.

The Labrador-shepherd puppy, named Sunny by staff at the county shelter, has not officially been put up for adoption in spite of a lot of requests from interested locals.

Veterinarians suspect the puppy’s ears were possibly cut off with either a pair of scissors or a serrated knife, said Animal Control Lt. Daniel DeSousa.

The department is asking for the public's help to recognize whoever may have committed this crime. A local group is offering a $3000 prize for any information about the suspect.

Despite his ordeal, Sunny's future looks brilliant. "He still cuddles up to people," DeSousa said. "It just goes to show you how low humans can be and how merciful animals can be."

Caroline Wozniacki Enters Sydney International

World number one Caroline Wozniacki will join a severely competitive field heading to Sydney in the lead up to next month's Australian Open in Melbourne.

The 20-year-old Dane established her entry alongside US Open champion Kim Clijsters, Australian number one Samantha Stosur and former world number one Ana Ivanovic in the Sydney International from January 9-15.

And tournament director Craig Watson said he anticipated seven of the world's top 10 women to be in the field when entries close early next week.

"I feel that the Medibank International Sydney is the most excellent preparation for the Australian Open," Wozniacki said.

"All the top players will be competing there in Sydney and as of this I am confident that I'll get the matches I need."

Wozniacki has played the Sydney tournament for the past two years with her finest result coming in 2009 when she lost a three-set quarter-final to top seed Serena Williams.

She took over the number one ranking on October 11 after an outstanding 2010 season which saw her claim six titles, with Montreal, Tokyo and Beijing.

She also entered the semi-finals at the US Open in September for the second straight year and the final at Indian Wells in March.

Honda Adds Small Car Brio To Eco-Car Market

Honda has confirmed plans to sell an eco-car in Thailand early next year but plans for a hybrid remain unclear even though Japanese competitor Toyota has two petrol-electric models available.

Honda introduced its Brio eco-car prototype, which will be featured at the Thailand International Motor Expo that runs till Dec 12 at Impact Muang Thong Thani.

The prototype is close to the mass-production model, which will go on sale in March at a starting price of around 400,000 baht, said Honda Motor chief manager Takanobu Ito.

The Brio five-door hatchback has a 1.2-litre gasoline engine, and a four-door sedan might be analyzed later.

Honda also aims to initiate the Brio in India next year with a starting price below 500,000 rupees. Brios made in Thailand and India might be exported to other markets in the region excluding Japan and China.

Mr. Ito said the Brio, which is smaller than the City and Jazz, reflected worldwide order for smaller cars as well as consumers' concerns about fuel economy and impact on the environment.

Thankful!

Welcome back all my lovely readers! Sorry for long break, but I thoroughly enjoyed not spending any time in front of a computer for almost an entire week..but I am now ready as ever to come back with all kinds of great holiday recipes, ideas and fashions, so get ready to fully embrace these next few weeks with Amy's Simple Life, Holiday Special!!

Before completely jumping into the Christmas spirit I wanted to give much thanks to all the wonderful people and things in my life

By being home for the past week I was quickly reminded of all the many blessings I have in my life, I am so thankful and appreciative of my family!  They are honestly the most important people in my life and I couldn't imagine a single day without them!  I was very lucky to see my newly-wed sister and her husband and their new place in South Florida!  We had a wonderful time with both sides of the family and of course ate wayy too much!

The whole family at the Rehearsal!

I was also greeted by the most amazing weather, it was unusually warm (even for Florida) the entire time I was home, definitely a nice change from our chillier temperatures up here!

I am also very grateful and thankful for such amazing friends!! Many of us are spread throughout the country, which can be tough at times but when we do get to see eachother and reconnect it always seems as no time in the world has passed, I hate to brag but I do honestly feel like I am the luckiest girl to have the absolute best friends in the world!! Thank you to each and everyone of you for being in my life!

At this very thankful and reflective time of year I was able to sit back and think of all those more everyday things that we let pass us by.. I am truly thankful for a great job, that lets me have my independence, I am thankful for a great place to live, a great and always expanding closet :) that allows me to fully express myself, I am thankfully to have my health, even though I went threw some harder times with injuries earlier this year I am very thankfully to be back to running, and those are just a few, but I think what I learned the most during this holiday was to be thankful for the un-chaotic life I am currently living, its ok to just be normal!! I also am very thankful for the future, and to have so many opportunities and possibilities that are out there for me!

So I do hope all of you were also able to sit back, relax and enjoy your Thanksgiving and truly cherish all those people and things in your life!

May you all be thankful throughout the entire holiday season, and remember the true meanings of this season!

Hornsby, water clock (Theme Day: Time)

"Man, Time and the Environment", also known as the Hornsby Water Clock or Hornsby Water Sculpture is a fusion of kinetic sculpture, decorative fountain, musical instrument and a functional clock. It is located in Hornsby Mall, a pedestrian mall in Florence Street, in the northern suburb of Hornsby. This work, unveiled in 1993, was created by Australian sculptor Victor Cusack from cast bronze, stainless steel, and toughened plate glass. It is approximately 8 metres tall and weighs 20 tonnes, including the pontoon which rotates one revolution every 12 hours as a pointer sweeps past Roman numerals on the fountain’s perimeter, with the mechanisms driven by water. Time is represented by three types of water-powered clocks, a 4th century BC Greek clepsydra, an 11th century Chinese water wheel clock and a 17th century Swiss pendulum clock, plus a 17-note bronze tubular bell carillon that rings the hour based on a design found in an 18th century English church. Environment is represented by sculpted forms of the fauna of Hornsby Shire from the rainbow lorikeet, to the blue tongue lizard, the fruit bat and possum. The clock face bears the inscription "Dare We Forget" as a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment. Man is represented by the figure of a woman and a child.

To God, Via Facebook

I don't know if you're on Facebook.  Half a billion people are, but of course that means that 5.5 billion are still making up their minds. It's certainly much more in vogue to slam the site.

But if you do have Facebook, I have an exercise for you.  Put yourself in the presence of God -- that is, open yourself to prayer, however you do that -- and then, in that space, wander through the status updates and Facebook pages of your friends.  Do it aimlessly -- that is, not with any particular goal or to catch up with person X or Y.  Don't use this time as an opportunity to leave a note, to "like" or to "poke".  Be a lurker -- or better put, be a witness.  Consider yourself as having the opportunity to stand in a place similar to God, with the privilege of getting a glimpse at the private lives of other people.

Do that for 10 or 15 minutes.  Then stop and sit with what you've seen.  Where was your attention drawn? Where were your emotions stirred up -- and in what ways?

After you've sat with that a few minutes, a follow up: Having seen what you've seen and felt what you felt, if you now actually were God, what (if anything) would you want to do?

It's worth sitting with those desires a while.  God chose to enter into the world as a man.  What did he see that made him do that? And what came with that -- that is, returning to the question of the last paragraph, what do you want to do?

An important proviso: Theologians have a hundred reasons for why God chose to walk among us as one of us, many of them very abstract.  But God's motivation for entering in was as specific and personal as his knowledge.  He didn't know "humanity"; he knew Frank and Edna and George.

The point being, don't feel the need to abstract from the specifics of your friends' pages that touch you. Trust that it really could be that God came down simply because he wanted to taste Marge's now fresh cookies, or because Amy's having a bad day, or because he wanted to see keyboard cat play Nickelback or this kid out.

Princess Fiona Title’s World's Largest Cruise Ship, Allure Of The Seas

In what's billed as a first for a cruise ship, a 3-D animated movie character -- Princess Fiona from DreamWorks Animation's Shrek series - served as the godmother throughout the naming ceremony for Royal Caribbean's record size Allure of the Seas.

Princess Fiona appeared in 3-D on the screen in the 5,400-passenger ship's Amber Theater to preside over the festivities, interacting with Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd.'s Chairman and CEO, Richard D. Fain.

"It's never simple choosing the right godmother, but we realized we had the perfect candidate right in front of us," Fain told several thousand invited guests in attendance. "Princess Fiona is not only a Royal (she) symbolizes the fun and entertainment that is so astonishing on Allure of the Seas."

The choice of Fiona as godmother, kept undisclosed until the ceremony took place, was no doubt intended to highlight Royal Caribbean's new partnership with DreamWorks. The partnership is bringing Shrek, Fiona and other characters to Allure, which is tied with one-year-old sister Oasis of the Seas as the world's largest cruise ship. It also gave the line a possibility to show off the new 3-D theater experience it has installed on Allure, a first for the line.

The ceremony also incorporated a bagpipe-and-drums procession, the U.S. national anthem performed by Broadway star MiG Ayesa and a scene from Allure's Blue Planet aerial show. The event culminated with the customary breaking of a Champagne bottle featuring a label created by pop artist Romero Britto, who has a gallery on the ship. The bottle breaking was done by a karate chop by Princess Fiona.

The ship, at present in the midst of a series of preview cruises, sets sail on its first voyage with paying passengers on Dec. 1.

Australian Researchers Discover New Squat Lobsters

The small crustacean, which can fit in the palm of a hand, is one of ten lobster species collected off the western coast of Australia during research missions in 2005 and 2007. Six of the lobsters—including G. subspinosa—are new to Australia, researchers just announced. Two more are completely new to science.

Hundreds of identified species of squat lobster are found in oceans worldwide at depths ranging from six feet (two meters) to three miles (five kilometers). Squat lobsters, also known as squatties, are distinguished by their large front claws and compressed bodies. The animals are more intimately related to hermit crabs than true lobsters.

As for G. subspinosa, "this genus is one of the most colorful of all squat lobsters," said marine scientist Joanne Taylor of Museum Victoria, who co-authored a paper relating the new lobsters published in the October 12 issue of the journal Zootaxa.

World's Tallest Residential Tower To Be Completed By 2011

Dubai-based developer Tameer has announced that the world’s tallest residential tower will be finished by Q4 of next year, though it will soon be overtaken by another tower.

The Princess Tower, which is at present under construction and located in Dubai Marina, will reach 107 storeys and stand at 414m once completed in 2011, offering 763 residential units to buyers.

But it won’t hold the record for long if the 516m Pentominium Tower, also located in Dubai Marina and already under construction, meets its programmed completion date of 2013.

All the Christmas DAY-CORE is up!

FYI: That's how you say "decor" in the South.

This weekend we went to cut down our Christmas tree.

We put it up in the LIVING ROOM this time.

Got all the lights and ornaments up... I still felt like something was missing...

A little burlap did the trick! I looooooooooooove my tree now.

For my unconventional tree topper I used a stocking my Mom made out of my great-grandmother's crazy quilt. It's fun and unusual!

The square, red velvet and burlap tree skirt might be my favorite part. I found it at TJMaxx. Of course I had to have my Mom monogram it!

Burlap and green velvet stockings:

The entire mantle. I need it to be simple.
Do you see the cute little horse at the bottom right? He's wrapped in burlap too!

I cut some fir branches from behind the tree and put them in vases around the living areas.

The back windows with three wreaths:

Entry way table:
(See my cute monkey?!?!)

I can't help but love this fir branch in a vase in a class cover with a deer antler.

It definately looks like CHRISTMAS at the McClure household!

ahhhh. it feels "just right"
