This side view of the Sydney Town Hall is from York Street. In the bacground of this sandstone heritage bulding are contemorary skyscrapers the HSBC Centre on George Street and Lumiere in Bathurst Street. This view of the town hall is improved in Winter when the trees have dropped all their leaves.
The Balmain Post Office is a heritage building on Darling Street, in the inner west suburb of Balmain. The post office with teh magnificent clock tower is part of a large public building completed in 1887, which also includes the court house and police station. The building was designed by James Barnet and contains elements of Victorian Academic Classical, Victorian Free Classical and Victorian Italianate architectural styles.
The Hyde Park Barracks are at the southern end of Macquarie Street. It was designed by colonial architect Francis Greenway and constructed by the convict labour between 1818 and 1819. It was the principal barracks for male convicts in the state of New South Wales, providing lodgings for convicts working in government employment around Sydney. From 1848 it was adormitory for newly arrived female immigrants. From 1887 to 1979, state government offices were based here and today it is a museum operated by the Historic Houses Trust.
This view is from the rooftop of the Glenmore Hotel at The Rocks. The clock tower rises above the Clocktower Square shopping centre and the autumn leaves of the trees in Argyle Street. This contemporary, but already dated design, seems quite out of place in an area full of heritage buildings such as the Museum of Contemporary Art partly seen in the background. The contemporary office buildings nearby, rising from Circular Quay into the city centre, might be a closer match.
This sundial beside the driveway is dwarfed by these trees in the grounds of Government House, in the Royal Botanic Gardens.
The former post office in the inner west suburb of Burwood was built in 1892. It was designed by government architect Walter Liberty Vernon in the Victorian Italianate architectural style and is now on the National Estate Register.
"Man, Time and the Environment", also known as the Hornsby Water Clock or Hornsby Water Sculpture is a fusion of kinetic sculpture, decorative fountain, musical instrument and a functional clock. It is located in Hornsby Mall, a pedestrian mall in Florence Street, in the northern suburb of Hornsby. This work, unveiled in 1993, was created by Australian sculptor Victor Cusack from cast bronze, stainless steel, and toughened plate glass. It is approximately 8 metres tall and weighs 20 tonnes, including the pontoon which rotates one revolution every 12 hours as a pointer sweeps past Roman numerals on the fountain’s perimeter, with the mechanisms driven by water. Time is represented by three types of water-powered clocks, a 4th century BC Greek clepsydra, an 11th century Chinese water wheel clock and a 17th century Swiss pendulum clock, plus a 17-note bronze tubular bell carillon that rings the hour based on a design found in an 18th century English church. Environment is represented by sculpted forms of the fauna of Hornsby Shire from the rainbow lorikeet, to the blue tongue lizard, the fruit bat and possum. The clock face bears the inscription "Dare We Forget" as a reminder of the importance of preserving the environment. Man is represented by the figure of a woman and a child.
This view of the inner city suburb of Woolloomooloo is from Cowper Wharf Road, close to the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf. Forbes Street has been blocked to traffic and converted into a mall. An old warheouse on the left is now the Artspace Visual Arts Centre. A recent development of flats, restaurants and shops with a clock tower has been built on the right, in a style to match the historic buildings in this area. The tall building in the distance is Horizon Apartments at Darlinghurst.
The Australian Steamship Navigation Company building (ASNC) is located on the corner of Hickson Road and George Street at The Rocks. This warehouse and office building was designed by William Wardell in the Federation Anglo-Dutch style and completed in 1884. It was later used as Government Ordnance Stores and in 1906 the Department of Defence moved in. It was converted to office space and from 1950 was occupied by the Australian Commonwealth Offices for the Department of Works and Housing. It was acquired by the Sydney Cove Redevelopment Authority in 1989, who restored it in 1991-92 to its original appearance. It now has galleries, retail space and restaurants at street level on Hickson Road and Circular Quay West and commercial offices on the upper floors.
The post office in the inner city suburb of Redfern is a wonderful heritage building with a magnificent clock tower and cupola. Completed in 1882, it was designed by James Barnet in the Victorian Free Classical style.
The Crescent Park is located in the western suburb of Fairfield. It part of the commercial centre, beside the railway station. A clock and the magnificent International Monument that I featured yesterday are found in this park.
The Wentworth Park Sporting Complex is located in the inner west suburb of Glebe. It is best known for the greyhound racing track that has been here since 1932. This view of the art deco clock tower and track looks back towards the city office buildings and Sydney Tower features prominently in the background.
Lake Northam is a small lake in Victoria Park, which is located in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The clock towers and globes above the old Grace Brothers department store buildings (top) and the tower above Market City can be seen in the distance. We've had a lot of rain recently which has certainly made the parks and gardens a lot greener. You can see the difference between these photos which were taken on the weekend and the shot of the fountain (bottom) from a few weeks ago here.
The Northbridge Clock was constructed in 1948 as a memorial to those who died in World War 2. According to the plaque, it was erected by the Northbridge Comforts Fund and unveiled by the Governor of New South Wales, Lieut-General J. Northcott.

The entrance to Bicentennial Park features a clock tower and a fence of lattice. The trees behind the clock tower are the ones that could be seen in my photo of the lake that I featured here.
This warehouse building on the Princes Highway at Tempe was last used as the headquarters for Ateco, an automotive equipment wholesaler. After being renovated, it has been sitting vacant for the last few years but there are plans to redevelop the 10 hectare commercial site behind this building into a massive IKEA store that will also house the Swedish company's Australian headquarters. I was glad to hear that there are plans to retain this warehouse, office block and clock tower as part of the new development.
