Ultimo, Sydney Technical College

The Sydney Technical College building, which is part of the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), is located along Mary Ann Street in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Built in 1891, it was designed by William Kemp in the Federation Romanesque architectural style. The brick and terracocotta construction is adorned with Australian ornamental plants and animals such as such as waratahs, kangaroos, wombats, echidnas, platypuses and lizards.

Ultimo, The Muse

The Muse is an exhibition space at the Sydney Institute of TAFE (Technical and Further Education), in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. It was designed by William Kemp in the American Romanesque and Queen Anne Revival architectural styles and first opened in 1893 as the Technology Museum. It housed the contents of Australia’s first international exhibition of industry from around the world. The contents of this exhibition were later relocated to the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences which is now the Powerhouse Museum. It is best viewed in the winter months when the leaves have fallen off the trees.

Powerhouse Museum, The 80s Are Back

'The 80s Are Back' is an exhibition currently on display at the Powerhouse Museum at Ultimo. This exhibition, which explores Australian life and culture in the 1980s, has been one of the most popular and longest running in the museum's history. The fascination for this decade remains with a revival of much of its culture in recent years, that has lasted longer than the decade itself. It was a great nostalgic trip, revisiting styles and trends from the 1980s and their effect on music, film, television, fashion and design.

Ultimo, Embassy Conference Centre

The Embassy Conference Centre is a historic building on George Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. Designed by Varney Parkes, the son of Sir Henry Parkes, it was originally built as a branch of the Bank of New South Wales in 1894. The Federation Romanesque design of the facade reflects the boom period of the late 1800s. A gold smelting and assaying department, established at this Railway Square branch in 1915, provided the best facilities for the treatment of gold coming from mines in Australia and New Guinea. It is now a venue for hire for meetings, seminars and conferences.

Ultimo pub

The Abercrombie Hotel which was formerly known as the Australian Hotel is on the corner of Broadway and Abercrombie Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. This art deco pub is part of the huge Carlton and United Brewery redevelopement site in Chippendale. Many of the former brewery buildings on the six hectare site behind the pub have already been demolished and will be replaced by many new high rise apartment buildings. This pub is closing soon and will be incorporated in the new development. I thought the former Australian Hotel would be a perfect photo to show on Australia Day.

Broadway, Grace Brothers department store

These two landmark buildings on Broadway, built in the Federation/Queen style of architecture, were originally the flagship buildings of the former Grace Brothers department store. Both feature distinctive, iconic clock towers and globes. The original five storey building on the left in Glebe was built in 1904 and the matching building on the right in Ultimo was completed in 1923. Changing retail patterns in the city, led to Grace Bros vacating the Broadway store in 1992 and later taken over by the Myer department stores. The buildings were restored and redeveloped in 1998. The 1904 building became part of The Broadway Shopping Centre, a shopping mall with retail space, cinemas, restaurants and car park. The 1923 building is now UniLodge, student accommodation for the nearby University of Sydney. Broadway is the name of the road that runs from Railway Square to the University of Sydney and also creates a border between the suburbs of Ultimo and Chippendale, Glebe and Camperdown.
