Sydney Olympic Park, ferry wharf

The reflection of the Sydney Olympic Park ferry wharf along the Parramatta River is enhanced by the golden afternoon sun. The wharf serves the western suburb of Wentworth Point, which was previously known as Homebush Bay. A regular service is provided by RiverCat ferries on the Parramatta River route of Sydney Ferries.

Bicentennial Park, pavilions

These pavilions (above), scattered throughout Bicentennial Park, provide shelter and barbecue facilities for visitors who picnic in the park. The WatervieW Convention Centre (below), which overlooks Lake Belvedere, hosts many events and functions.

Bicentennial Park education centre

The Bicentennial Park Education Centre at Homebush Bay is a place to learn about the parklands, the wetland ecosystem and the environment.

The entrance to Bicentennial Park features a clock tower and a fence of lattice. The trees behind the clock tower are the ones that could be seen in my photo of the lake that I featured here.

Bicentennial Park, Trelliage Tower

The Treillage Tower is located at the highest point of Bicentennial Park at Homebush Bay. The tower sits at one end of an avenue of plane trees, with a fountain at the other end. It is a 3 storey, 17 metre high viewing tower constructed with trellis. Treillage is a French word for lattice, which was commonly used in gardens in the 16th century. The tower provides great views of Bicenttennial Park, Homebush Bay, Parramatta River and the Sydney city skyline, in the distance.

Bicentennial Park sundial

The Bicentennial Park Sundial at Homebush Bay is described as a Horizontal Sundial.

It was a bit late in the day so the shadows from nearby trees prevented me from showing its intended purpose, which is to display the time.

Bicentennial Park, Peace monument

The Peace Monument is a contemporary sculpture in Bicentennial Park at Homebush Bay. It was commissioned to celebrate the International Year of Peace in 1996. The layout is based on a complex interplay involving the Earth’s axis and the trajectories followed by the planets in our Solar System. It illustrates what it might be like to be out in space looking back at earth to remind us of our fragile place in the solar system. Because we don't feel or see the earth turning, we are rarely conscious that we live on a sphere constantly spinning through space. Throughout history, bells have been rung to celebrate the achievement of peace. There are three bells here for The Earth, The Moon and Space.

Bicentennial Park wetlands

Bicentennial Park sits on the shore of Homebush Bay, beside Sydney Olympic Park. It was created in 1988 to celebrate Australia's Bicentenary. It involved recycling over 40 hectares of a former rubbish dump into a regional recreation area and the conservation of 53 hectares of a wetland ecosystem on the Parramatta River. The wetlands feature boardwalks and viewing towers.

Homebush Bay brickpit

A couple of views of the Brickpit Ring Walk at Homebush Bay (above).

This piece of machinery (below) has been salvaged from the old brickworks and stands as a monument, at the entrance of the ring walk.

Homebush Bay brickpit ring walk

This pond was originally a brickpit that was originally going to be redeveloped as a tennis complex, as part of Olympic Park for the Sydney 2000 Olympics. During construction, the endangered Green and Golden Bell Frog was discovered living here, so the development was moved and the habitat was protected. The Brickpit Ring Walk was built to allow visitors to view the habitat from above.  I featured this walkway here a couple of months back. On a return visit there were some great clouds above which were reflected in the pond below, so it was worth photographing again.

Sydney Olympic Park Abattoir Heritage Precinct

The old and the new. The Abattoir Heritage Precinct (above) at Sydney Olympic Park sits right beside the contemporary hotels (below) that are close to Olympic Boulevarde.

Haslams Creek, Homebush Bay

One of the bends in Haslams Creek at Homebush Bay. The viewing pier can be seen in the distance. Following some decent rainfalls, the grass is certainly green around the creek at the moment. It's amazing how different it was here, when we were in the middle of the drought.

Sydney Olympic Park railway station

Olympic Park railway station serves the stadiums and at Homebush Bay. It is an underground station that is located on a balloon loop. There are limited services on weekdays from Lidcombe station and regular services from other stations during special events.

Sydney Olympic Park, The Sprinter

The Sprinter is a metallic monument at Sydney Olympic Park at Homebush Bay. It was originally installed in 1998, on top of Sydney Tower in the city, with two other figures for the Sydney Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2000. The sprinter was relocated here in 2002, while the other two sculptures, a gymnast and a Paralympic basketballer, were reloacted to the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

Sydney Olympic Park, Discobolus

Discobolus, is a monument located in Stockroute Park that links the Sydney Olympic Park site to the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. The steel discus measures seven metres in diameter, with a mid section made of armour plated glass featuring images of a discus thrower. The marble monuments scattered around the park celebrate the Greek origins of many Australians and the spirit of Hellenism. The Cyprus pines, olive trees and Australian eucalyptus reinforce the connection between the original home of the Olympics and the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. There was once a view of the Olympic Stadium from this site but this has now been blocked by a row of office blocks behind the monument.

Sydney Olympic Park, Sydney Showground Main Arena

The Main Arena at Sydney Showground at Homebush Bay was another stadium that was used during the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000. It is now used as the showring for the Royal Agricultural Society during the annual Royal Easter Show.
