The lake in the middle of Holroyd Gardens Park was created by filling an old clay brickpit in the western suburb of Holroyd. The old Goodlet and Smith Brickworks that were located here, were founded in 1884 and ceased operating in 1989. They were redeveloped as part of the Holroyd Gardens Estate in 2004. The remaining heritage brickwork kilns and associated buildings (left) sit alongside the new residential flats (right).
Lake Northam is a small lake in Victoria Park, which is located in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. The clock towers and globes above the old Grace Brothers department store buildings (top) and the tower above Market City can be seen in the distance. We've had a lot of rain recently which has certainly made the parks and gardens a lot greener. You can see the difference between these photos which were taken on the weekend and the shot of the fountain (bottom) from a few weeks ago here.
A monument sits in the middle of a fountain, in the middle of an island, in the middle of Lake Northam, in the middle of Victoria Park, in the inner city suburb of Camperdown. Erected in 1967, the monument is a replica of the yacht Barrenjoey, to honour William H. Northam and his crew who became gold medal winners in the 5.5 metre yachting event at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
Chipping Norton Lake is part of the Georges River, in the south western suburb of Chipping Norton. After farming activities declined in this area, the rich topsoil and underlying sand was mined. The dangerous pits and eroded riverbanks left behind were rehabilitated into parklands in 1977. This view is from Homestead Park and the little sandy foreshore here is called Grand Flaneur Beach. It's unusual to think of this as a beach, considering it is part of the Georges River and being located so far inland, at about 20 kilometres from Botany Bay and the coast.
Lake Gillawarna sits in the Mirambeena Regional Park, in the southwestern suburb of Georges Hall. It's a popular spot for Australian White Ibis.
The picturesque Lake Belvedere at Bicentennial Park, Homebush Bay. It's hard to believe that this park was once a rubbish tip.
