Mosman, war memorial

The Mosman War Memorial is located on the corner Myahgah Road and The Crescent at Mosman. The original World War 1 memorial is a large grey stone obelisk, dedicated in 1922. A flagpole, a small stone to commemorate World War 2 and a memorial sundial were added to commemorate subsequent conflicts. This memorial sits on the edge of Allan Border Oval, surrounded by six cypress trees.

Ashfield, war memorial

The Ashfield war memorial stands in the centre of Ashfield Park, beside Parramatta Road, in the inner west suburb of Ashfield. It was established in 1921 and dedicated as a grateful tribute to the soldiers, sailors and nurses who volunteered and gave their lives in World War 1. It is a ten metre high obelisk on a concrete plinth with an enamelled tiled floor. The Rosemary Bushes have been planted by Ashfield Council in memory of those who gave their lives in the Boer War, World War I, World War II, Korean War, Malayan War and Vietnam War. The wreaths at the base of the memorial have been laid to commemorate Anzac Day, which is a day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand today.

Watsons Bay, war memorial

 This war memorial is the Lieutenant Gideon James Grieve Memorial which sits in Gap Park, on a clifftop at Watsons Bay. This Boer War monument, made of sandstone and marble, once supported the figure of Lieutenant Grieve, who was originally from Scotland, in highland dress uniform. It was also originally designed as a drinking fountain with a tap and a cup. Australians served in contingents from the six colonies in 1900, as part of the British Empire, and then as the Commonwealth of Australia from 1901 for the Boer War in South Africa. The inscription reads: To the memory of the late Lieutenant G. J. Grieve who fell fighting at the Battle of Paardeberg, South Africa 18 February 1900, aged 36.

Mascot war memorial

The Mascot war memorial is located in Memorial Park in the eastern suburb of Mascot. It was established in 1920 and dedicated in grateful memory of fallen heroes in World War 1. It features an emblematical shield and palms of victory in electro bronze and a polished grey granite column supporting the Orb of the Empire, embellished with bronze mountings and Victoria Cross. The wreaths at the base of the memorial have been laid to commemorate Anzac Day, which was a day of commemoration in Australia and New Zealand this past Sunday.

Rookwood, Sydney War Cemetery

This war memorial is located at the entrance of the Sydney War Cemetery. It honours the World War 2 servicemen who died in New South Wales and whose ashes were scattered or who rest in places where full commemoration could not be given.

Carlton, war memorial

The Kogarah war memorial is located beside Jubilee Oval in the southern suburb of Carlton. It was established in 1919 and dedicated to the Naval and Army Corps involved in World War 1. It was originally located on Gray Street at nearby Kogarah but was moved to this reserve to accomodate a wider road there. Tomorrow is Anzac Day, which is a national day of remembrance in Australia and New Zealand, commemorating those who served and died for their countries.

The Rocks, sculptures

These sculptures adorn the walls of the Customs Officers Stairs at The Rocks. The sculpture of Robert Campbell (ltop) was created by Dennis Adams. Robert Campbell was a pioneering merchant in Sydney who built the private Campbell's wharf and warehouses in this area. The other sculpture (bottom) is a war memorial created by Lyndon Dadswell. The plaque reads: In memory of the men of the 6th Australian division who sailed from these shores during World War 2 (1939-1945) to serve in North Africa, Greece, Syria, Ceylon and Papua New Guinea.

Rose Bay, war memorial

This magnificent ornate gate (top) in Lyne Park leads to the Rose Bay war memorial (bottom) in the eastern suburb of Rose Bay. The war memorial was dedicated on 21st April 1935 but commemorates World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and Vietnam War. The gate came from an old mansion called Colebrook, which was located in a nearby suburb called Double Bay.

Northbridge clock

The Northbridge Clock was constructed in 1948 as a memorial to those who died in World War 2. According to the plaque, it was erected by the Northbridge Comforts Fund and unveiled by the Governor of New South Wales, Lieut-General J. Northcott.

Enfield, town hall and war memorial

The Enfield war memorial (left) sits outside the old Enfield Town Hall (right), on Coronation Parade in the south western suburb of Enfield. This war memorial was built as a World War I memorial and unveiled in 1924. The 105mm Howitzer gun on the sandstone pedestal was donated by the French government in recognition of Australia’s wartime assistance during World War I.

Liverpool, monument and lamp

This unique war memorial that features an old street lamp is located on the corner of Macquarie Street and Memorial Avenue at Liverpool. It commemorates Australia's involvement in the Boer War and a local soldier who died in the conflict at Bloemfontein, South Africa.

Liverpool, Lighthorse Park

Lighthorse Park, beside the Georges River at Liverpool, features a war memorial to the Australian Light Horse Brigade. The concrete pillar (left) which is engraved with two Light Horsemen and a Light Horseman’s slouch hat was unveiled on teh 11th November, 1988. The other monument in the park is a restored steam engine (right) produced by Marshall, Sons & Co. It looks impressive but I couldn't find any information about why it has been placed in the middle of the park as a monument.

Liverpool park

Bigge Park in the southwestern suburb of Liverpool features a clock tower, bandshell (left) and war memorial (right).

Bowral memorials

This fountain and memorial (above) welcomes visitors into the town of Bowral. This war memorial (below left) is located in the same reserve.along with a ornate archway (below right) with the words 'Lest We Forget' in the metal lacework.

Chifley, war memorial

There aren't many landmarks in the small eastern suburb of Chifley, except for this war memorial flanked by a couple of cannons and a flag pole. The Bob Clarke Memorial Reserve, sits between the carriageways of the divided Anzac Parade, which was once a tramway.

Padstow, war memorial

The Padstow war memorial,  sits in a prominent position along Memorial Drive, in the south western suburb of Padstow. The curved stone wall featuring a large cross in the centre, dedicated in 1967, is located beside the railway station.

Cronulla, war memorial

The Cronulla war memorial sits in the middle of Munro Park, in the southern suburb of Cronulla. It is an obelisk with a paved sandstone base, a sandstone block mid-section and a polished granite top section. It features a 1914-1919 Honour Roll.

Randwick, war memorial, Anzac Day

The Randwick war memorial is a sandstone cenotaph located in High Cross Reserve, in the eastern suburb of Randwick. It was dedicated in 1922 and contains within the structure the names of over four thousand World War One veterans, inscribed on a parchment roll. Today is Anzac Day, a public holiday which commemorates one of Australia's most important national days, when Australians remember those who have served and died in wars. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and the date marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Anzac forces during the First World War at Gallipoli, Turkey.

Lidcombe, war memorial

This Lidcombe war memorial sits in the middle of Wellington Park, in the western suburb of Lidcombe. The memorial is topped with a statue of an Australian soldier in a solemn stance, resting on his rifle. Four columns form the plinth for the statue with gilt name plates for both World Wars mounted on the flat internal faces.Anzac Day is commemorated in Australia and New Zealand tomorrow.

Burwood, war memorial

The Burwood war memorial arch featuring an impressive sandstone archway, is located at the entrance to Burwood Park, in the inner west suburb of Burwood. The Memorial was dedicated on 11th November 1922 and unveiled on Anzac Day 1923. We're coming up to Anzac Day on Saturday, the day that Australians remember those who served and died in wars, so I'll feature a few memorials around Sydney over the next few days.
