Clutters are blockages of cosmic energies.
Do you know that this attitude of throwing away unwanted things proved to be beneficial for us? Yes, we had to keep replacing ceiling fans, lighting fixtures, food processors and even window curtains. As a result, our house is always packed with new utilities.
So, when replace, we buy new and contemporary designer gadgets. Last month, we had to replace as many as three outdated ceiling fans; we bought two monte carlo fans from farreys.com.
Miracle cure for cold and throat infection.
My husband ran high temperature and he also complained severe pain below the abdomen and his throat got infected too. Apart from the prescribed medicines, I administered a few doses of home made medicines and he believed that wifely recipes alone cured him.
Do you want to know about my healing techniques?
I gave my husband hot pepper water thrice a day. I also made him gargle with salt water in the night, just before bed time.
Both worked miracles! Try it without fear when needed.

Think Editor, Not Oatmeal
It's also the 50th anniversary of the death of Fr. Wilfrid Parsons, SJ. No, it's not the guy from Cocoon and Quaker Oatmeal -- that's Wilford Brimley. Wilfrid Parsons was editor of America from 1925-1936. Before I went to Australia I did some research on Fr. Parsons. There's a great story about him and his secretary. Apparently, he had a female secretary. I know, it's shocking. What is a priest doing working closely with ... a woman?
So, of course, the Jesuit Curia in Rome ordered he had to fire her. This, although Parsons said she was both good at her job and really needed the money. (She was newly married.)
Fine, he fires her, and replaces her with a man. Problem solved? You'd think. Except, the replacement was a non-Catholic. The provincial was not pleased. He prohibited Parsons from entering into a permanent contract with the man. His fears, apparently, were that a non-Catholic should not be seeing confidential material from America. Parsons tried to explain that the secretary only handles magazine correspondence, and has no contact with Vatican missile codes, the secret phone number for Fr. General or other "top secret" information. Still, the Provincial would not relent: "Even as a magazine-secretary I do not at all like the idea of having a non-Catholic since much magazine correspondence (that never gets into ‘copy’) may be of a nature that we do not wish non-Catholics to see.”
Talk about different times....
The other interesting piece of trivia about Parsons' run is that he began what is still the standard acceptance procedure of America: a submitted article is given to at least two editors, who give their opinion, and then it is passed to the editor-in-chief. If either editor says yes, the editor-in-chief is free to take it or refuse it. If both say no, he must pass.
Actually, in looking for a photo of Parsons online, I found one more little tidbit. In Nov, 1935, he wrote this letter to Time, criticizing its reporting:
Sirs:
I think you ought to know that you got off on the wrong foot on your Cleveland Eucharistic Congress story (TIME, Sept. 30). Whatever your good intentions were, from this editorial desk I have heard complaints about it from all over the U. S., and they seem to be growing in volume. Many readers of your paper, spontaneously and without any collusion, saw in the story many a sly dig against the Church and its personalities. You see, once it gets into people's minds that you have no respect for anything, they see in all of your airy remarks something sinister or at least unfriendly. Watch your adjectives!
WILFRID PARSONS, S. J.
Editor America New York City
Time responded:
Never were TIME'S intentions more sincere than in its effort to report thoroughly, seriously and fairly the preparations for Cleveland's Eucharistic Congress. Thoroughly astonished and disturbed was TIME, therefore, when it learned that its report had displeased many Catholic readers. If offense was given, TIME is more than sorry.—ED.
Do I sense some sarcasm in those abundant, earnest adjectives?
In May, 1935, Time reported another battle with Parsons:
Many a U. S. radio listener, one night last March, heard the first program in a 13-week series sponsored by the Mexican Government Tourist Bureau to advertise Mexico as a vacation spot. Lasting 15 minutes, the program went out over 15 stations of National Broadcasting Co.'s "Blue" network, covering the States East of the Mississippi, North of North Carolina. Angel Mercado's band tinkled Mexican popular tunes. In English, an announcer blurbed Mexico. In Spanish, a singer recited a poem to a musical accompaniment.
Not until last week did non-Spanish-speaking listeners learn that, translated, the poem went as follows:
Oh—the night I spent there
At the side of a girl
Of graceful and regal bearing,
Firm and wide proportions.
Later she sang to me,
Interspersing her song with kisses,
Some war song,
To the accompaniment of my guitar.
And then my heart
With enthusiasm filled
As if at the call of arms
In conflict had engaged.
But my greatest pleasure
Was when she disrobed of her flowing gown.
Like a flexible branch
She disclosed her beauty
An early rose
Which had broken loose from its bud
Boasting of all its beauty.
Knowledge of what the verses were all about might never have been spread but for the alertness of a Manhattan Jesuit, Rev. Wilfrid Parsons, editor-in-chief of America. From acquaintances who heard the broadcast he learned that the verses were only part of a long poem called En Elogio de Silves (A Eulogy of Silves), written by one Al-Motamid, an 11th Century Arab roue who lived in Seville. For Spaniards the piece parallels "Frankie & Johnnie." Further, Father Parsons learned that after the poem's recital the narrator sniggered coarsely, exclaimed: "But why go on? You know what happened!"
At once Father Parsons protested to NBC, which offered a number of explanations to the effect that someone should have been more vigilant. Father Parsons protested to the Federal Communications Commission, which started the motions of a routine investigation. Sixteen Catholic & non-Catholic Congressmen excitedly demanded that the Commission summarily revoke the licenses of all stations that broadcast the Mexican program.
Parsons was apparently very involved with the creation of the Legion of Decency and the Production Code for Hollywood films, which dictated the moral standards for Hollywood films for 20 years. Fellow editor Joseph Breen left America to work as head censor in Hollywood. For some time he was the most powerful man in Hollywood.

Brown Sugar Syrup
A sweet homemade maple or vanilla flavored syrup
1 pound brown sugar
1 1/4 cups water
1 teaspoon maple or vanilla flavoring
pinch of salt
Directions: Mix brown sugar and water in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, stirring occasionally. Reduce heat and simmer for 3 minutes. Remove from heat and add flavoring.
Baked Apples
Cinnamon-sugar sprinkled over baked apple pieces; delicious hot or cold!
9 cooking apples (anything except Red Delicious will work)
3/4 cup water
lemon juice, optional
3-4 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cinnamon
1. Peel apples. Cut each apple in half and remove the core.
2. Place apples core-side-up in a 9x13-inch glass baking dish. Pour a little water into the dish -- about 3/4 cup -- so that there's a thin layer on the bottom.
3. If apples are not very tart, sprinkle with lemon juice. For tart apples, skip this step.
4. Sprinkle each apple half with about 1/2 teaspoon sugar.
5. Sprinkle cinnamon over apples.
6. Bake uncovered in a pre-heated 325 degree oven for 25-35 minutes or until apples test tender with a fork. Serve hot or cold, or over ice cream!
If your apples aren't very good, just cut apples into fourths, remove bad spots, and toss into the dish.
Three-Cheese Baked Spaghetti
Spaghetti pasta tossed with three cheeses, topped with a meat sauce and baked
Pasta Ingredients:
8 ounces spaghetti
2 tablespoons butter
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 teaspoons dried parsley
1 cup cottage cheese
1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
6 ounces (1 1/2 cups) shredded mozzarella cheese*
2 ounces crumbled feta cheese, optional
Sauce Ingredients:
8 ounces ground beef
1 clove garlic, minced
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
3 cups spaghetti sauce
1/2 tablespoon sugar
1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
2 ounces (1/2 cup) shredded mozzarella cheese, optional
1. Cook spaghetti according to package directions (al dente). Drain and return to pan (remove from heat though!). Add butter and stir until butter is melted. Add remaining pasta ingredients, stirring to combine. Spread pasta-cheese mixture in the bottom of a greased 8-inch square baking dish.
2. Brown ground beef with the garlic and onion. Drain grease and return to pan. Add pepper, spaghetti sauce, sugar, and Italian seasoning. Stir well and then pour over the pasta, spreading evenly. Sprinkle cheese on top if desired. 3. Bake uncovered at 350 degrees for 35 minutes or until top cheese is browned and spaghetti is bubbly.
*If desired, substitute part of the mozzarella cheese with shredded cheddar cheese. |
HM Wheat Bread
A slightly sweet, healthy half-whole-wheat bread (also includes instructions for making this a 100% whole wheat loaf!)
1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (see additional notes for a 100% whole wheat version)
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
2 teaspoons instant active dry yeast
1. *Combine first 6 ingredients in a large mixing bowl; stir.
2. Add flours and yeast, and knead until dough is smooth and elastic, about 10-15 minutes. Place dough in a greased bowl, turning once to grease top. Cover with a clean towel and let rise until doubled, about 40 minutes.
3. Punch dough down; knead for a few minutes until smooth and then form into a loaf. Place in greased loaf pan and cover. Let rise in a warm place until almost doubled in size, about 30 minutes.
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes. If loaf starts browning too soon, lightly lay a piece of foil on top of the loaf to prevent too much darkening.
5. Remove bread from oven and allow to rest in pan for a few minutes. Remove to a wire rack and cover with a cloth. Slice and enjoy while still warm! Leftover bread can be stored in an airtight bag or frozen until needed.
*If you have a bread maker, you can use the dough setting to knead it for you. Just put ingredients in according to order listed.

More Election Videos
For those looking for a flashback to the "ancient past".
Or the more recent past.
Or have you seen this one about voting? The first minute, you're gonna love it. The second, you'll be thinking up a parody. (I hope to have one online very soon.) The third minute, your'e going to just hate it. And you'll never feel so so grateful for Sarah Silverman and that guy from Superbad. And then you're going to be thinking up parodies again, and wondering, where was that one that McDermott said he was working on. And then you're going to get to the end, and you'll feel better, until you see Dustin Hoffman again, and then you're just gonna be sick and wish you could pelt him with Rubik's Cubes.
One more week.
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons
Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons, by Engelmann, Haddox, and Bruner is the book I have been using kind of to teach my daughter to read and learn the alphabet. But I am not using it in the way the book was meant to be used not at all. Here is how I am using it.
I took some cue cards/blank recipe cards purchased from the dollar store and a black sharpie and I put all the different letters and combinations on the cue cards that they teach. Complete with blend so she could see how to say them. I did all 44 letters/blends and every day we would do some cue cards... nothing hard core because I like to keep things simple with her. She prefers that and it is much less stress when your dealing with a 4 year old. So every day we are adding more and more cue cards until she can do them all without prompting.
After she is done with the letters/blends then we will go on to the words they have in the book. I will just take my cues from her. If she can say the blends without prompting then it is time to go onto the words.
This book is available at most libraries I have found and it is a wonderful resource to use to make up the cue cards and not do the lessons. Mind you some people have had wonderful luck with the lessons it just isnt' something my daughter can handle and I know that so I just changed it up for us.

Who needs counselling?
Very recently, a girl student committed suicide because of the humility she suffered at her class meted out by her teacher. It was a co-education school and just because the girl didn't complete her home work, she was highly humiliated publicly and was asked to sit between two boy students.
She was so ashamed that she committed suicide. The parents suffered intolerable loss and the country is a silent witness to such gross negligence by teachers. What they lack basically is the kindness expected of them. How can that teacher think of such perverted ideas to punish?
God, please save the children!
Alli is an FDA approved diet pill.
Two kinds of people consume diet pills such as alli, noxycut, orovo etc. Beauty conscious people who are also in show business take diet pills as appetizer suppressant to prevent getting fat.
I understand both the categories of people don’t maintain their intake of diet pills over the long period. Diet pills alone won’t help one to shed their obesity; some may require additional treatment combined with vigorous physical activity.
These days, diet pills are sold over the counter with out the need of doctors’ prescription. Alli is one such diet pill that is approved by FDA and it is said to reduce the body’s fat absorption.
Alli might cause some side effects. Please go to consumerpricewatch.net for full information about the diet pill Alli.

Staying Motivated and feeling like your doing something...
As far as asking yourself if you are doing enough. There are many styles of homeschooling and just because "susie" uses a curriculum and you don't doesn't mean she is doing any more or less then you are. Children learn in different ways. I know that if I was to do just work sheets with my daughter I should just forget it. It won't work she would be totally bored to tears and be difficult to teach. I have chosen a literature based curriculum because after doing much research and sitting back and watching my daughter I realized that it was the fit for her and so far so good.
Just because one child learns one way doesn't mean the rest of your children will learn the same way. That is the beauty of homeschooling you can customize the curriculum to fit the child. Something that can not be done in a public school.
I have been homeschooling my daughter for about two months now and it is going well, we do have times when we dont' get done everything I want to in a day but I still walk away at the end of the day knowing we did accomplish things whether it was just a walk and talking about nature or baking something.
So staying motivated is harding than feeling like you have done something I think anyways or maybe they go hand in hand. You will still be motivated or will be motivated period if you know you are accomplishing something every day. Look at the little things. Keep a list of the things you do throughout the day so that you can look back at it at the end of the day and see that you have accomplished something. That would probably be a good start.
I will try to post more on this subject in another post. I have to get ready to start my day here this morning and set up things for my daughter and I.

Wouldn't It Be Nice?
Two weeks and one day to the election....
In other news:
As of yesterday, there's a new Catholic news website available. It's called CathNewsUSA. CathNews gathers stories on Catholic issues in the U.S. from both Catholic sources such as Catholic News Service and Catholic News Agency, and secular sources such as Newsweek, USA Today and Foreign Policy. If you're into Catholic news, it's a great resource, and one that's not already present in the US. The idea comes from Fr. Michael Kelly, an Australian Jesuit who began a similar service for the church in Australia, where it's been very successful.
Today's stories include the statement by the archbishop of St. Louis that voters will have to account for their vote on Judgment Day; alternate dismissals being prepared for the end of Mass; Bishop Wenski's efforts toward a more humane immigration policy, and more.
Just a little Catholic heads-up.
Did I mention it's two weeks and one day to the election ?
And did you all see Sarah Palin Saturday night? If not, check them out here and here.

Children's Museum... and schedule for the week...
Shaylin loved working in the McDonald's and going in the Dinosaur cave. She loved playing the drums as well as meeting up with some new homeschool friends and a former nursery school friend Ani. It really was a good morning and I was impressed with the museum. I am sure we will be making many more trips back that way.
Today I am just getting ready to start school I know it is 3pm but Rob doesn't go into work until 2pm now so we start it late in the afternoon. It really doesn't take long we read some of the stories after bath too before bed. We do crafts in the morning as Shaylin likes it when her daddy helps. I have to decide on our outings this week.

I am proud of you Ganguly.
Thank you very much Ganguly. Though I missed see you score a century against the Aussies, I am immensely happy to see that big smile on your face. You had the last laugh. It seems Vengsarkar was too eager to come forward with his appreciation.
I don't know why the entire India is so much against you. You deserve definitely something better. I only hope you carry on unruffled for the rest of the series.
You are the only Indian captain who always stood for the India's pride and prestige. You gave tit for tat for several captains of other countries. Most of your predecessors always bowed down in front of them.
I salute you dear Ganguly. March on. India needs you.

Jury Duty, Day 1
I asked the clerk, this wonderful bloke who looked like he just got poured out of the bar next door, and had a wonderfully mellow way about him (unlike the guard at the entrance of the building, who kept barking at us to get into two lines -- like it mattered) - What's the craziest excuse you've ever heard to get out of jury duty, once they're here. He told me, "Well, today, someone told me the toilet seats are unacceptable, they need to leave.
For real.
Apparently, don't try that at home. It doesn't work.
The funny thing is, it feels like our lives are so saturated with law shows and movies, you're interpreting everything around you in a weirdly dramatic way. So for instance, coming back from lunch I dropped my water bottle. And the first thought I had was, Will anyone think this is some kind of signal I'm making? Hello, crazy. Or when I was leaving for lunch I kept thinking someone was going to come up to me and talk about "the case". Except I didn't have a case. I had been sitting in the room watching music videos on my iPod and cackling over "Dr. Horrible's Sing-a-long Blog" (which, if you haven't seen it, go get it at iTunes. Some great musical numbers).
So again, hello, crazy.
If I do get on a case, after each witness I'm going to make that Law & Order sound effect. "Your witness." "DUN-DUN." It must be done.
Wish me luck.

How to save buckets of money?
Computers that are usually dependable, ditch us only at the wrong time always. While we have not much work to do with the desk top, it will standby you like a pet dog; but occasionally, it will fall sick when we want its support the most.
Oh, well, after all they are machines!
Trusting...
Yesterday there was an announcement at my husband's work place that they are closing come March 2009. So he will no longer have employment.... I could sit here and have a pity party or I could be optimistic because I know that we will be okay. We always make it through. We have two special needs children... I stay at home and homeschool our youngest due to her special needs... but we always seem to make it through no matter what challenges are put in front of us.
I know that when one door closes another door opens you just have to have the faith to walk through it. The Lord comes in varied packages and often in the packages we least expect. So I am trusting in Him totally and completely.
He will be your rock and stay, where you can lean and go for comfort and peace! (Ps. 71:3)

Using the CAT6 bulk cables.
Last Friday, my son took a break from his hectic IT training and came home. We all immediately gathered around him and requested him to talk about his training. When he started off, my husband was able to understand most of it including several technical terms and gadgets.
