Port Botany, Sydney Ports Corporation

 The Sydney Ports Corporation is located in the eastern suburb of Port Botany, on the shore of Botany Bay. The facilities at Port Botany consist of two container terminals with six container vessel berths and a bulk liquids berth complemented by container support businesses, bulk liquid berth storage facilities and private berths at Kurnell.

Sans Souci, cannon

This cannon barrel stands as a monument in Cook Park on the shore of the Georges River. It is located near the mouth of the river at Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The barrel came from the HMS Wolverine, flagship of the Australian Squadron 1876-1881. HMS Wolverine was built at Woolwich dock, England in 1863 as a three masted steam corvette with 21 guns and a flush deck. When it arrived in Sydney it served as a training ship for the naval brigade. It was sold off in 1895 and when it became unseaworthy ended up in Auckland, New Zealand. It was dismantled at Brick Bay, later renamed Stanley Bay.

Sandringham, baths

Sandringham Baths are located on the shore of Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sandringham. The weather has started to cool now that Autumn has arrived and there weren't any swimmers here late in the afternoon as this seagull kept watch. This area had been known as Stripper's Point in the 1830s, from the local occupation of tree-felling and bark-stripping. Luckily the name was changed to Sandringham by William Rust, an ardent royalist who built the Prince of Wales Hotel here in the 1870s to honour Edward VII, the Prince of Wales, who in 1872 was also building a royal residence at Sandringham, in Norfolk, England.

Mascot, runway and beach

This little beach on Botany Bay sits beside one of the north-south runways of Sydney Airport, in the eastern suburb of Mascot. This Qantas 747 is preparing to take off to the north, just at it passes by the airport control tower. The Socceroos is the nickname for Australia's national soccer team that is sponsored by Qantas and promoted on the side of this plane.

Dolls Point, Cook Park

These Norfolk Island Pines are located on the edge of Cook Park, overlooking Lady Robinsons Beach, in the southern suburb of Dolls Point. The clouds were rolling in from Botany Bay to threaten the sunny day.

Brighton-Le-Sands, beach

The empty beach in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands, looking out across Botany Bay. The beach volleyball courts and the swimming enclosure lie abandoned under the grey skies of Winter, except for some visiting seagulls.

Monterey, monument

This monument is located in Cook Park at Monterey, close to the shore of Botany Bay. It was erected in 1970 to commemorate the Bicentennary of Captain Cook discovering the east coast of Australia on the 29th April 1770, so that makes today the 240th anniversary. The plaque describes this monument as an obelisk, which seems a bit strange to me because I always thought an obelisk had to be a pointed pillar.

Ramsgate Beach, baths

Ramsgate Baths are in the southern suburb of Ramsgate Beach. These timbers and bars are all that remain of the original Ramsgate Baths that were constructed in 1950 and demolished in 1973. A larger enclosure, incorporated the southern side of the original baths in 1975. Most of it was replaced in 1999 by a floating net structure, consisting of plastic tubes and mesh netting, weighed down by chains. This part of Botany Bay has been used for public sea-water bathing since 1930.

Brighton-Le-Sands, boardwalk and pavilion

This boardwalk beside the beach at Botany Bay, is in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands. It was a beautiful day for a walk or a bike ride along the bay, to take advantage of the blue sky. Kyeemagh, Cook Park

The wind has had an interesting effect on the growth of these pines in the southern suburb of Kyeemagh. They are located along Cook Park, beside Lady Robinsons Beach on Botany Bay.

Kurnell sunset (Skywatch Friday)

This sunset is viewed from Kurnell, the southern headland of Botany Bay. Kurnell is considered to be ‘the birthplace of modern Australia’ because it is the place where Captain James Cook and his ship the Endeavour landed on 29th April 1770. This led to the British settlement of Australia in 1788, when the First Fleet arrived. It's a brilliant view across the bay with flag pole and tree silhouettes on the shore.

Botany Bay, rainbow

We've had a had a lot of grey skies and spring showers over the last week. On Friday afternoon, I noticed this amazing rainbow in the sky and followed it to Botany Bay. By the time I was out of my car, the storm clouds started gathering again and the rainbow had lost some of its brilliance but I managed a couple of snaps before it disappeared.

Botany Bay coastal patrol

This coastal patrol boat was moored in Botany Bay, just off the beach at Brighton-Le-Sands. In the background, a plane is coming in to land on the Sydney Airport runway that extends into the bay and a ship that uses the port facilities at Port Botany can be seen between the heads.

Yarra Bay

Yarra Bay is one of the smaller bays of Botany Bay and is part of the suburb of Phillip Bay. That's a lot of bays. Yarra Bay Sailing Club is the only building down near the beach and Yarra Bay House is a historic house up on the hill behind the bay.
