Pendle Hill, shopping centre

The shopping centre on Pendle Way in the western suburb of Pendle Hill. This is typical of a western suburb shopping centre, located close to a railway station. The buildings and structures on the industrial properties, on the other side of the railway track, dominate the skyline.

Port Botany, Sydney Ports Corporation

 The Sydney Ports Corporation is located in the eastern suburb of Port Botany, on the shore of Botany Bay. The facilities at Port Botany consist of two container terminals with six container vessel berths and a bulk liquids berth complemented by container support businesses, bulk liquid berth storage facilities and private berths at Kurnell.

Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, The Tank Farm

"The Tank Farm" is the name of this structure in Ballast Point Park, in the inner west suburb of Birchgrove. The tanks depict how Ballast Point was once used by industry as a working harbourfront and grease manufacturing site. The three remaining riveted horizontal tanks date back to the 1920s and were formerly used to store solvents. They are in their original form, making them a visual landmark from land, air and the harbour.

Walsh Bay, crane

This crane on a barge seen here on the weekend moored on Walsh Bay at Dawes Point, between pier one and pier two, was being used for maintenance work around the Walsh Bay wharves on weekdays.

Birchgrove, Ballast Point Park, Tank 101

"Tank 101" is both artwork and a renewable energy generator, located in the middle of Ballast Point Park at Birchgrove. It has been created to symbolise the past working history of the site as an oil refinery by Caltex. The original Tank 101, built in the 1930s, was the largest industrial storage vessel at this site, used to store crude oil for processing into lubrication oil. It was the largest tank in Australia to use rivet technology. Graphics with a dot font typeface are used throughout this site to reflect the thousands of rivets and circular tank shapes that covered the site. Panels of curved sheet steel from the old tank were rescued from the old tank and incorporated in the structure. The text is a line from "The Death of Isaac Nathan" a poem by Australian poet Les Murray: "Stone statues of ancient waves, tongue like dingoes on shore". Eight wind turbines harness the sea breeze to create energy that is used in park lighting.

Cockatoo Island, stack and tower

The chimney stack and the water tower from the industrial past of Cockatoo Islandstill dominate the skyline. The coal fired powerhouse and brick chimney stack were built in 1918, to provide electricity for the island. The concrete tower is the tallest of three that provided water to the island. For a distant view of how they dominate the skyline of the island, there's a shot here from across the harbour.

Cockatoo Island, Sutherland Dock

Cockatoo Island has a long history of ship repair and shipbuilding activities. Sutherland Dock was built with free labour between 1882 and 1890. Nearby Fitzroy Dock was built using convict labour between 1847 and 1857. The shipyard closed in 1992 and the island is now being revitalised as a public attraction on Sydney Harbour.

Cockatoo Island, Biennale, art

Cockatoo Island featured 120 works by 56 artists during the 17th Biennale of Sydney. Being a former industrial site, the island provides some interesting surroundings for the art work such as this one, Kasbah created by Kader Attia. This art work is made from rooftop materials collected from improvised dwellings and shanty towns on the fringes of cities across the world, complete with television antennas and satellite dishes. Visitors were invited to walk along an uneven path across them.

Cockatoo Island, Fitzroy Dock

Cockatoo Island has a long history of ship repair and shipbuilding activities. Fitzroy Dock was the first dry dock, built using convict labour between 1847 and 1857. Shipbuilding began on the island in 1870 with the construction of dredges, barges and tugs. Nearby Sutherland Dock was built with free labour between 1882 and 1890. In 1913, Cockatoo Island became the naval dockyard of the Royal Australian Navy and grew to become Australia's biggest shipbuilding and dockyard facility. The shipyard closed in 1992 but many of the workshops, docks and equipment were retained.

Cockatoo Island, cranes

Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour. In 1839 it was chosen as the site of a new penal establishment and convicts built prison barracks, a military guardhouse and official residences. The island was used for the colony's ship repair and shipbuilding activities after the first dry dock was completed by convicts in 1857. It became Australia's biggest shipbuilding and dockyard facility in the 20th century. The island's maritime industrial activity ceased in 1992 but many of the workshops and equipment have been retained as an attraction.

Holroyd, brickworks

The lake in the middle of Holroyd Gardens Park was created by filling an old clay brickpit in the western suburb of Holroyd. The old Goodlet and Smith Brickworks that were located here, were founded in 1884 and ceased operating in 1989. They were redeveloped as part of the Holroyd Gardens Estate in 2004. The remaining heritage brickwork kilns and associated buildings (left) sit alongside the new residential flats (right).

Rookwood, power lines

These high voltage power lines and towers run through the middle of Rookwood Cemetery. Similar towers dominated the skyline through nearby Homebush Bay until about ten years ago. When it was transformed into Olympic Park for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the unsightly structures were replaced with underground cables. There hasn't been a need to the same with the rest of those lines which run through this cemetery. The brilliant sky above last weekend made them look slightly less unsightly. Pyrmont, Waterfront Park

These three enormous rusted steel spheres have been installed in Waterfront Park, in the inner west suburb of Pyrmont. This area was once used by CSR Limited for a major sugar mill, sugar refinery and associated industries. Over the years, the company diversified operations into rum distillery, building products and eventually mining. This park is located on the site of the former CSR factory which was used for the production and storage of Caneite fibre board, a by-product from the crushing of sugar cane and Hardboard, made from eucalypt and other hardwood chips. These spheres were Digesters used to produce Hardboard. The wood chips were expanded using high pressure steam, releasing the natural lignins in the wood that turned them into fibre that were pressed into boards for use as building material. The spheres were salvaged from the factory before demolition and used as historical interpretive elements in the park.

Garden Island dockyard

Garden Island, located in the eastern suburb of Potts Point, is the home port for the naval fleet based on the east coast of Australia. It is a major marine engineering and refit centre for the Royal Australian Navy and Thales Australia. The island has supported naval activities since 1788 and was originally used as a garden bed to grow food for ship crews. Land was reclaimed between Potts Point and Garden Island to expand the site for engineering facilities. These views are from Mrs Macquarie's Point, across Woolloomooloo Bay.

Newtown, flour mill

The Crago Flour Mills (top) was a big industrial area beside the railway lines in the inner city suburb of Newtown. This is being redeveloped into a residential estate, with many new apartment buildings (bottom) being built on the site but also many of the historic factory buildings and silos have been retained and converted into flats.

Eveleigh, National Innovation Centre

An old train carriage on display outside the National Innovation Centre at the Australian Technology Park. This was once the site of the Eveleigh Railway Yards, which were the largest and most technologically advanced workshops in the southern hemisphere in the late 19th century.

Cockatoo Island

Cockatoo Island is the largest island in Sydney Harbour, located at the junction of the Parramatta and Lane Cove Rivers. The island was originally heavily timbered in red gums which attracted many sulphur-crested cockatoos. This view is from the northern suburb of Woolwich.

St Peters recycle centre

These olympic rings are displayed outside the entrance of a recycling centre in the inner west suburb of St Peters, just off Princes Highway. It's appropriate that they were relocated to a recycling centre because they were salvaged after the Sydney Olympic Games, when a number of these were illuminated and displayed around the city.
