Sans Souci, cannon

This cannon barrel stands as a monument in Cook Park on the shore of the Georges River. It is located near the mouth of the river at Botany Bay, in the southern suburb of Sans Souci. The barrel came from the HMS Wolverine, flagship of the Australian Squadron 1876-1881. HMS Wolverine was built at Woolwich dock, England in 1863 as a three masted steam corvette with 21 guns and a flush deck. When it arrived in Sydney it served as a training ship for the naval brigade. It was sold off in 1895 and when it became unseaworthy ended up in Auckland, New Zealand. It was dismantled at Brick Bay, later renamed Stanley Bay.

Captain Cook Bridge

The Captain Cook Bridge is one of three major road crossings of the Georges River. It is a six-lane precast prestressed concrete bridge that links Rocky Point Road at Sans Souci in the St George area to Taren Point Road at Taren Point in the Sutherland Shire. A ferry service ran between these southern suburbs from 1911 and a vehicular punt ran between these two points from 1916. The Captain Cook Bridge was opened in 1965 and named after explorer Captain James Cook who landed at nearby Kurnell on 29 April 1770, when navigating his way around Australia. At sunset yesterday there were plenty of fishermen fishing off the rocks at Sans Souci and in boats on the river.

Georges River, sunset

I captured this sunset over the Georges River last weekend from a wharf at Sans Souci. The sun is dropping down towards Tom Uglys Bridge, which links the southern suburbs of Blakehurst and Sylvania.

Sans Souci sunset

These balmy summer evenings are great for a walk along the beach. I captured this glorious sunset on Wednesday night around 8 pm looking towards the Captain Cook Bridge at a spot where Sans Souci ends and Sandringham begins, where the Georges River flows into Botany Bay.
