Newtown, warehouse (Theme Day: Mystery Object)

This redeveloped warehouse is located in the inner city suburb of Newtown. The giant mouth, complete with teeth and a tongue poking out, is perched on the facade. There is no signage on this building that might offer any clues about this mystery object.

Newtown, street art (Theme Day: Graffiti)

I ventured to the inner city suburb of Newtown for some attractive graffiti to feature on this theme day. This artwork appears on the side of a furniture shop on the corner of King Street and Rochford Street. Newtown is a very colourful inner city suburb where many students, bohemians, hippies and yuppies make their home. It's also a very multicultural suburb but I'm not sure why they have specifically chosen to depict Latino characters here. Anyway, my best attempt for translations of these Spanish messages across this wall are "What's Happening!", "Newtown...My Neighbourhood" and "He's Crazy!".

Newtown, flour mill

The Crago Flour Mills (top) was a big industrial area beside the railway lines in the inner city suburb of Newtown. This is being redeveloped into a residential estate, with many new apartment buildings (bottom) being built on the site but also many of the historic factory buildings and silos have been retained and converted into flats.

Newtown churches

Two of the historic churches at Newtown. The Mission Uniting Church (top) on King Street features the Revelation Ceiling, a giant mural based on the biblical book of Revelation which spans 300 square metres and covers the entire ceiling. St Josephs Catholic Church (bottom) completed in 1869 is on the corner of Bedford Street and Station Street, opposite the railway line.

Newtown, St Stephen's Anglican Church

St Stephen's Anglican Church is a heritage listed church built in 1874, located in Church Street at Newtown.

Newtown, St Georges Hall

St George's Hall on King Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. This heritage Victorian Italianate building was built in 1887. The front of the building contained shops and offices, while the back consisted of the main hall and several smaller meeting rooms. It is now part of the Newtown High School of the Performing Arts.

Newtown post office

Newtown Post Office is a heritage building on King Street, in the inner city suburb of Newtown. Built in the 1890s, this magnificent building was designed by government architect W L Vernon, in the Queen Anne style.
