Kogarah, St George Hospital

The Australian flag flies at St George Hospital in the southern suburb of Kogarah. The building is not remarkable but I was fascinated by this retro sign, with the raised lettering and logo, on this refurbished building facing Belgrave Street. I've been spending some time here recently for physiotherapy to mobilise my leg again, following an accident a couple of months ago.

Kogarah, workshop

This mechanic's workshop at Kogarah suffered a collapse last Saturday. The excavation work at the front of the building by the power company, following three weeks of rain, resulted in the foundations giving way. It wasn't a particularly remarkable building but the old shopfront with its eyecatching colours made it a landmark on the Princess Highway. There was traffic chaos when the highway had to be shut down so workmen could demolish the shopfont and stabilise the rest of the building.

Kogarah, water feature

This water feature runs almost the entire length of Kogarah Town Square. The water rises from the three fountains which spill into a pool. The water cascades down a number of terraces and drains into a spiral amongst the grasses. It was installed around the time that the square opened in 2005. On the 28th March 2009, a memorial was installed dedicated to International Workers Memorial Day. Today is a day that workers, union, families and communities remember and mourn those who have been killed or injured at work and fight for the living.

Kogarah, shop and house

Many of the old houses and shops in the southern suburb of Kogarah have been demolished in recent years to make way for more higher density developments such as blocks of flats, commercial and office space or the expanding hospitals and schools in this area. Luckily, on the Princes Highway, this shop and residence with a bit of character has survived. It currently houses Monetarium, a dealer in rare coins and banknotes.

Kogarah, Christmas Tree

This Christmas tree is in Kogarah Town Square, outside Kogarah Library. In recent years, many local area councils have begun to decorate their main streets, pedestrian malls or suburban squares at Christmas time.

Kogarah, graffiti art

Kogarah Library is currently showing a spray paint art exhibition called "Kogarah Spray On!". Most of it just looks like graffiti on plywood but I was impressed with this panting (left) of a Tangara train and a Railway Parade, Kogarah road sign, with the city skyline in the background.

Kogarah railway line sunset

This sunset on Monday produced some amazing colours in the sky above the railway line, just south of Kogarah railway station.

Kogarah mural

This mural which adorns one of the walls of the Kaimaki Café in Post Office Lane at Kogarah, features local landmarks and symbols. These include the water reed which is a symbol of Kogarah, whose name was derived from an Aboriginal word for 'place of reeds' and a Dragon, which is the symbol of the St George area. Landmarks include the Kogarah Community Centre building and Norfolk Island Pines along Botany Bay. There are also a whale and dolphins off the coast, pelicans and boys playing soccer and football in the St George colours of red and white.

Kogarah, fire station

The Kogarah Fire Station is a heritage listed building on the corner of Gray Street and Kensington Street, in the southern suburb of Kogarah. This building was built in 1907 in the Federation Arts and Crafts style. It was designed by government architect Walter L Vernon, who also designed the old Kogarah Post Office, which is now the Kogarah Community Aid and Information Centre.

Kogarah, School of Arts

The heritage listed Kogarah School of Arts is located on the corner of Bowns Road and Queens Avenue, in the southern suburb of Kogarah. The Victorian Italianate style building was opened in 1887 and restored in 1990. The two storey school was used for various art classes and technical education. The hall at the rear was used for theatrical performances, concerts, tea meetings, balls. Part of the building was used by the local council for the council chambers until 1912 and a portion housed the local library.

Kogarah, Resurrection of Christ Greek Orthodox Church

The Resurrection of Christ Greek Orthodox Church is in the southern suburb of Kogarah. It was constructed in the 1980s but due to modern day noise restrictions, the planned bell tower on the left was never completed. The entrance to the church is decorated with palms for Palm Sunday.

Kogarah Community Centre

Kogarah Community Aid and Information Centre is located on the corner of Railway Parade and Belgrade Street, Kogarah. The turreted building was designed by government architect Walter L Vernon in the Federation Queen Anne style and built in 1892. It was originally the site of the Kogarah Post Office until 1974.
