Waterloo Library is a heritage listed building in the inner city suburb of Waterloo. The building was originally the Waterloo Town Hall, designed by John Smedley and built in 1881 in the Victorian Italianate style. It is historically significant as evidence of the small inner city council areas which were subsumed into larger municipalities.
The Surry Hills Library and Community Centre is located on Crown Street, opposite Shannon Reserve. This iconic building, which was completed in 2009. features a high standard of design and sustainability. The southern facade is all glass, providing high levels of natural lighting throughout the building. The pedestrian mall and nature strip has been created by blocking off Collins Street to Crown Street.
The old Gordon Public School, located on the Pacific Highway in the northern suburb of Gordon, opened in 1871 and closed in 1989. This sandstone building was designed by George Mansfield in the Gothic Revival style and constructed in 1878, with a second block added in 1912. This building now houses a small museum known as the Headmaster’s Office Museum, the Ku-ring-gai Historical Society Research Centre and the Gordon Library Meeting Rooms.
The State Library of New South Wales on Macquarie Street featured light projections as part of Macquarie Visions at this year's Vivid Sydney Festival. The theme of the display was Words On The Street, featuring documents and words that showcase Australia and the people from 1810. The library is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year and is home to many Macquarie items and artefacts.
This Christmas tree is in Kogarah Town Square, outside Kogarah Library. In recent years, many local area councils have begun to decorate their main streets, pedestrian malls or suburban squares at Christmas time.
Morshead Fountain sits outside the Morehead Fountain Gate (top) to the Royal Botanic Gardens and opposite the State Library of New South Wales and Shakespeare Place (bottom). The fountain was erected in 1966 in memory of Lieutenant-General Sir Lesley Morshead and the men w ho served with him. Morshead was knighted for his defence of Tobruk in World War II.
