The Rocks, Rawson Institute for Seamen

This view of the Rawson Institute for Seamen, formerly the Mariner's Church, at The Rocks is from Circuar Quay West. The original Mariners' Church building in George Stret was designed by John Bibb in the Victorian Free Classical style in temple form and built in 1859. Alterations were designed by William Kent in Federation Free Classical style in 1909. A new chapel was built in the Inter-War Mediterranean or Romanesque style In 1927. The Bethel Union, which built the original church was involved in missionary activity among seamen. They leased the Mariners' Church to the Missions to Seamen in 1835, creating a mission for neglected seamen. The complex included accomodation, a hall for concerts and dining, smoking rooms, a library and a gymnasium. The two organisations combined functions and after Sir Henry Rawson instigated extensions which were carried out in 1910, the complex was renamed The Rawson Institute for Seamen. Breakfast Point, community hall

A winter sky over the community hall in the inner west suburb of Breakfast Point. The Breakfast Point Community Hall was only built in 2005 but the style and material makes it look like a church built in another century. The suburb was named to honour the point of contact between Europeans and Aborigines. Captain John Hunter's expedition were exploring the Parramatta River and having breakfast here on 5th February 1788 when they encountered the traditional owners of the land, the Wangal Clan. John Hunter, later became the Governor of New South Wales.

Darlinghurst, police station

 The former police station in the inner city suburb of Darlinghurst is now used as a Community Health Centre. Located behind Taylor Square, it sits on the corner of Bourke Street and Forbes Street, opposite Darlinghurst Court House and the old Darlinghurst Gaol.

Canley Vale, arts and crafts centre

Westacott Cottage is a heritage building in the western suburb of Canley Vale that is now used as the Fairfield Arts and Crafts Centre. This late Victorian era cottage on Railway Parade was built by William Westacott in 1886 and occupied by the family until the 1970s.

Cabramatta, leisure centre

The Cabravale Leisure Centre which opened in 2007 features some very comtemporary architecture. It's named Cabravale because it sits on the border of two western suburbs, Cabramatta and Canley Vale. Officially, it's in the suburb of Cabramatta but it's actually closer to the commercial centre of Canley Vale. The leisure centre features swimming pools, a gymnasium, wellness areas and function rooms. I prefer the architecture I see in older buildings but this sort of modern design catches my attention and I think all that metal looks good against the blue sky.

Kogarah Community Centre

Kogarah Community Aid and Information Centre is located on the corner of Railway Parade and Belgrade Street, Kogarah. The turreted building was designed by government architect Walter L Vernon in the Federation Queen Anne style and built in 1892. It was originally the site of the Kogarah Post Office until 1974.

Arncliffe community

The Arncliffe Returned and Services League (RSL) Club (left) is on Wollongong Road, beside Arncliffe Park. The Arncliffe Community Centre (right) is on Barden Street and includes Coronation Hall.
