Oatlands, house

Oatlands House, located in the north west suburb of Oatlands, is one of the earliest homes in the district. Built in the 1830s by Captain Percy Simpson, the name appears to be taken from Oatlands Park in England, which was close to the lands of Lord Dundas, for whom the neighbouring suburb of Dundas was named. This area had actually been known as West Dundas until 1991 when Oatlands was defined as a new suburb. Oatlands House is now used as function centre, with magnificent gardens and the surrounding land forming the Oatlands Golf Course.

Rockdale, house

This historic house is located in Frederick Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It was built in the Federation Queen Anne architectural style with Arts and Crafts touches.

Rockdale, day care centre

Roslyn Hall is a historic house located in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It was built around 1888 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style and is now used as a day care centre for children.

Harris Park, house

Kenilworth is a heritage listed house in Allen Street, in the western suburb of Harris Park. It was built around 1900 in the Victorian style of architrecture. In recent times it had been used as a school by the Australian International Conservatorium of Music and since 2005 forms part of the Australian International Performing Arts High School.

Croydon Park, house

But-Har-Gra is a historic house located on the corner of Georges River Road and Croydon Avenue, in the inner west suburb of Croydon Park. Since 1959, it has been used as residential accomodation for students and their families of the Moore Theological College which instructs ministers for the Anglican Church in Sydney.

Marrickville, house

This house built in the Victorian architecture style is located on Livingstone Road, in the inner west suburb of Marrickville is now used by Public Welfare Services.

Rockdale, houses

These beautifully restored homes built in the Victorian architecture style are located in a prominent position in Frederick Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. Their designs are almost a mirror image but their owners have chosen very different colour schemes to set them apart.

Heathcote, Bottle Forest Cottage

Bottle Forest Cottage is a historic house on the Princes Highway in the southern suburb of Heathcote. This area was originally known as Bottle Forest, named for the native bottlebrush plants found in the area. After the Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell conducted a survey of the area in 1835, he named it Heathcote in honour of an officer who had fought with him during the Peninsula Wars against Napoleon.

Cockatoo Island, houses

These historic houses that sit high on the cliff on Cockatoo Island were built in the Federation architectural style. The houses were once home to the medical officer and engineering manager when the island was a busy shipyard. They are available as holiday accommodation these days. 

Drummoyne, Iron Cove

Dawes Point, stairs

This steel staircase links the rows of old and new terrace houses high on the hill at Dawes Point to the Walsh Bay wharves on the harbour. The exposed sandstone and sandstone retaining walls give this area some great character and you don't see many of these sorts of steel staircases around the city in public areas. It is located opposite Pottinger Park and the Three Sisters artwork that I featured yesterday.

Dawes Point, Three Sisters

Three Sisters is a sculpture that sits in Pottinger Park in inner city suburb of Dawes Point. This sort of artwork in three pieces is known as a triptych. It was created in 1970 by Gordon Andrews, who also designed Australia's first decimal currency banknotes implemented in 1966. It is part of the Walsh Bay Sculpture Walk. This small park is on a hill behind the Walsh Bay wharves, with a backdrop of sandstone and terrace houses (left) and the Sydney Harbour Bridge (right).

Arncliffe, house

 'Gables' is a recently restored house built in the Federation style on Forest Road, in the southern suburb of Arncliffe.

The Rocks, Cadman's Cottage

Cadman's Cottage, is one of the few buildings that remain from the early period of the first European settlement at Sydney Cove. It was built in 1816 as the Coxswain’s Barracks, at what was then the water's edge, attached to Governor Macquarie’s dockyard and stores. John Cadman took up residence here in 1827 as Superintendent of Government Craft. From 1845-64, it was the Sydney Water Police Headquarters, and from 1865-1970, the Sydney Sailors’ Home Trust. The plain Georgian architecture was copied from English pattern books and was part of an attempt to build 'respectable' government buildings in the new colony. It was restored in 1972 and is now used as a museum.

Kogarah, shop and house

Many of the old houses and shops in the southern suburb of Kogarah have been demolished in recent years to make way for more higher density developments such as blocks of flats, commercial and office space or the expanding hospitals and schools in this area. Luckily, on the Princes Highway, this shop and residence with a bit of character has survived. It currently houses Monetarium, a dealer in rare coins and banknotes.

The Rocks, St Patrick's Day

These Irish businesses on George Street at the Rocks celebrated St Patrick's Day this week. The Irish Design Shop (top) was decorated in Irish colours. The shop is in a former Victorian terrace house with the Tara Tea Room located behind it. The Mercantile Hotel (bottom) is an Irish pub which was overflowing with patrons and beer. The Mercantile Hotel, established in 1915 and built in the Federation Free Style, is on the national heritage register for its historical significance to the area.

Tennyson Point

 Tennyson Point is a northwestern suburb, located on the northern shore of the Parramatta River. The suburb was named after the Tennyson Estate in this area which was subdivided in 1887 and itself was named after the English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, who was Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom during much of Queen Victoria's reign.

Summer Hill houses

Euroka and Merilbah are two heritage listed houses on Smith Street, in the inner west suburb of Summer Hill. They were both built in the Victorian Free Classical architecture style in the late 1890s.

Zetland

In the inner city suburb of Zetland, the high rise blocks of flats (top) built on redeveloped industrial land at one end are quite a contrast to the low rise terrace houses (bottom) built in an older residential area at the other end. The suburb was named for Thomas Dundas, the 2nd Earl of Zetland, who was a friend of Governor Sir Hercules Robinson, who served as the Governor of New South Wales in the 1870s.
