Rockdale, day care centre

Roslyn Hall is a historic house located in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It was built around 1888 in the Victorian Italianate architectural style and is now used as a day care centre for children.

Rockdale, houses

These beautifully restored homes built in the Victorian architecture style are located in a prominent position in Frederick Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. Their designs are almost a mirror image but their owners have chosen very different colour schemes to set them apart.

Rockdale, Bicentennial Park ponds

I was driving past Bicentennial Park at Rockdale last week and noticed that these algal blooms have covered a large proportion of the ponds here. The unusual green cover looks picturesque but I don't believe that it would be particularly good for the ponds and wildlife in the area.

Rockdale railway station, dust storm (Skywatch Friday)

On Wednesday morning an eerie orange-red glare covered Sydney's sky, caused by the worst dust storm in 70 years. Strong winds carried the iron-rich dust from the dry outback interior to the east coast, creating a orange-red haze. Dust storms are more common in the desert and outback but this was a very unusual sight for Sydney. The photos above were taken at Rockdale railway station around 6.45am, on my way to work. Rockdale, Macedonian Orthodox Churches

The Resurrection of Christ Macedonian Orthodox Church at Rockdale (left) is located on Frederick Street and was formerly a Uniting Church. Not far away, St Petka Macedonian Orthodox Church (right) on Railway Parade is a newer building. You don't usually have two churches of the same denomination in the same suburb in Sydney but in this case there has been some sort of dispute within the church which has resulted in a split.

Rockdale, fire station

Rockdale Fire Station, built in 1938 in the art deco style, is located in Bay Street in the southern suburb of Rockdale. It replaced the fire station on the corner of Princes Highway and Bay Street established in 1897. This fire station closed in July 2006 when the Rockdale Fire Brigade moved to the new Arncliffe Fire Station.

This Federation Queen Anne home with woodwork in the Art Nouveau style is located in Watkin Street, in the southern suburb of Rockdale.

Rockdale Bicentennial Park

A little blue bridge provides a walkway over the pond in Rockdale Bicentennial Park, which attracts many ducks. This recreation area was renamed in 1988 to celebrate Australia's bicentennial of European settlement.

Rockdale police station

The police station at Rockdale is located in King Street.

Rockdale Town Hall

Rockdale Town Hall is located on the Princes Highway, in the southern suburb of Rockdale. The local government area was originally known as the West Botany Municipality, declared on the 13th January 1871. It became The Municipality of Rockdale in 1884, when the suburb name also changed. It was was declared a city in 1995, and is now known as the City of Rockdale.
