The Sir Joseph Banks Hotel is located in Anniversary Street, in the eastern suburb of Botany, beside the Sir Joseph Banks Pleasure Grounds. The original two storey building, known as the Banks Inn, was begun in 1840 by Thomas Kellet and J Drew, in the Georgian architectural style. By the 1850s it had developed gardens, a private zoo and provision for outdoor sports. It became a popular weekend and holiday pleasure ground. About 1860, a further single storey wing was added to the east and around 1870, the north wing was added in the Victorian Italianate style, heavily ornamented with slab, parapets and two storey cast iron verandas. In 1920, the license was transferred to a new hotel with the same name, built on Botany Road. In 1926 the complex was sold and the hotel was converted into apartments.
This view from Lady Robinsons Beach in the southern suburb of Brighton-Le-Sands is dominated by the row of Norfolk Island Pines in Cook Park. The Novotel Hotel on The Grand Parade dominates the skyline in the suburb from other angles. I've featured many photos from around this area but usually looking out towards Botany Bay. This time I'm showing the view back from the bay. If you look closely in the park, on the left, you can see the sculpture of an olympian that I use as my avatar or profile photo.
The old Treasury Building in Macquarie Street has been incorporated into the Hotel InterContinental Sydney. The original sandstone building designed by Walter Liberty Vernon was built in 1896 and the hotel tower was built in 1984. The building has used for the former Colonial Secretary General and then for the New South Wales Premier’s Office. I took this photo during the recent Vivid Sydney festival which featured light projections on many buildings in Macquarie Street. The simple lighting on the facade of this heritage building also looks impressive to me.
The Palisade Hotel is a historic hotel in the inner city suburb of Millers Point. The Palisade Hotel was designed by Henry D. Walsh in the Federation Free Style and built in 1912, replacing an earlier hotel of the same name. The name came from the palisade fence built between Munn Street and Bettington Street. It overlooks the wharves in Walsh Bay and is close to many old warehouses in this area, so was popular with wharfies and labourers who worked in the area. The pub and hotel closed about a year ago for restoration work but the work has yet to be begin and the pub remains boarded up.
The promenade behind the harbourside beach in the eastern suburb of Watsons Bay, bathed in the golden glow of sunset. The are two famous landmarks here with brilliant views of Sydney Harbour and the city skyline. Doyle's On The Beach is a seafood restaurant on the left and Watsons Bay Hotel is a pub with a beer garden on the right. This was only a couple of weeks ago when we were having unseasonally warm weather and it felt like Summer was still hanging around. We've have a dose of reality since then with rain and a cold snap bringing us back into Autumn.
The S.S. South Steyne is a former Sydney Ferry that is now berthed next to Pyrmont Bridge at Darling Harbour. The 70 metres long steamship is the world's largest operational steam ferry. It was built in Leith, Scotland for the Port Jackson and Manly Steamship Company in 1938 and was in service between Manly and Circular Quay for over 36 years. It was restored in 1987 and is now used as a floating restaurant.
The Horse and Jockey Hotel is located on the corner of Parramatta Road and Knight Street in the inner west suburb of Homebush. Originally, this was the site of a magnificent hotel, known as the Half Way House Hotel, which burnt down and was replaced by this art deco pub in the 1920s. It was called the Half Way House Hotel because it was about half way between Sydney and Parramatta on the coach track, now Parramatta Road. The new name of the pub was chosen as a reminder that the old hotel overlooked a racecourse, now long gone.
The Berala Hotel is located on Woodburn Road in the western suburb of Berala. This pub, built around 1960, may not be that remarkable but they've painted the exterior in colours that are rather eye-catching and suited to the era it was built in. The name Berala is derived from an Aboriginal word taken to mean 'swamp duck' or 'musk duck', both referring to the birds of the nearby swampy Haslams Creek.
The Abercrombie Hotel which was formerly known as the Australian Hotel is on the corner of Broadway and Abercrombie Street, in the inner city suburb of Ultimo. This art deco pub is part of the huge Carlton and United Brewery redevelopement site in Chippendale. Many of the former brewery buildings on the six hectare site behind the pub have already been demolished and will be replaced by many new high rise apartment buildings. This pub is closing soon and will be incorporated in the new development. I thought the former Australian Hotel would be a perfect photo to show on Australia Day.
When the Star City Casino first opened in Sydney in 1995, as Sydney's only legal casino, it operated out of one of old wharves at Pyrmont. Later, it relocated to this purpose-built facility that features the casino, a hotel, theatre, nightclubs, bars, restaurants and a shopping arcade.
The Como Hotel is a historic hotel in the southern suburb of Como. It was originally built circa1878 and extensively rebuilt after a major fire in November 1996. The suburb takes its name from Lake Como, at the foot of the Bernese Alps in Italy.
The Maroubra Junction Hotel is located on Maroubra Road, Maroubra. Maroubra Junction is a locality in the suburb that derives its name from the location of the former electric tramways junction for services from the city to Maroubra Beach and La Parouse, which closed in 1961.
