Pitt Street Mall, benches

The recently refurbished Pitt Street Mall features collections of these odd looking benches in various shapes and sizes. The middle of the night is the only time when you're likely to see the pedestrian mall or benches as empty as this, in the centre of the city.

Martin Place, Christmas Tree

This large Christmas Tree is located in the Martin Place pedestrian mall, outside the General Post Office building. 'A Sydney Christmas', which was held in late November, is an annual Children's Christmas Concert and Tree Lighting in Martin Place featuring Christmas carols and a fireworks display.

Martin Place, menorah

This large Chanukah menorah was located behind these small fountains in the Martin Place pedestrian mall last week. Chanukah celebrates the rededication of the Temple after the successful Jewish revolt against the Seleucid monarchy. The nine-branched candelabrum lit during the eight-day holiday of Chanukah (or Hanukkah) is different from the seven-branched candelabrum used in the Temple, a traditional symbol of the Jewish faith. The middle branch, which sits higher than the others, traditionally holds the shamash which is used to light the other candles on each night of Chanukah. A new light was lit here on each night from December 1 to December 9 and they remained lit until the weekend. Martin Place also features a giant Christmas tree at the other end of the pedestrian mall, along with Christmas decorations and banners along the length of it.

Martin Place, The Bike Bike

The 'Bike Bike' is a temporary sculpture by Alisdair Nicol in Martin Place, near Macquarie Street. The sculpture is a 12 metre high Penny Farthing bicycle constructed from used and recycled bicycles, in such a way that they can be reused after the installation period. It challenges us to think about transport and the implications for our environment. This work is part of the Art & About Sydney festival which runs from 23 September until 24 October 2010.

Martin Place, Seven Network

The Colonial Centre is a more contemporary building on Martin Place that now houses the television news studios of the Seven Network. This glass and marble commercial building opened in the 1980s as the corporate headquarters of the State Bank of NSW, in the heart of Sydney's financial district. It featured office space, a bank branch on street level and a small shopping centre underground, linked to Martin Place railway station. It became the Colonial Bank in 1996 and then was taken over by the Commonwealth Bank in 2000, which aleady had other branches in Martin Place. The Seven Network moved its studios into the space occupied by the bank branch in 2004. I chose to run this photo today because it also happens to be the first day of the official television ratings season in Australia, when all the top television shows return to our screens. The Seven Network has been the top television network in terms of audience for the past two years. News and current affair programs are broadcast from these studios, including 'Sunrise', the breakfast program that often ventures into Martin Place outside.

Martin Place, Christmas Tree

Sydney's largest Christmas tree is located in Martin Place, a pedestrian mall in the heart of the city. Every year, the festive season begins in the city with the traditional lighting of the Christmas tree in late November, which is followed by a concert in the mall. This year, the tree decorations are stars in the traditional Christmas colours of red, green and gold.
