Martin Luther King Jr. Day
I still have a dream. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream. I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: - 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'" -Martin Luther King Jr.

Braces-Friendly Halloween Treat!
Dr. Scanlan and his team want to remind you to stay away from foods that might break or damage your braces. We also want to help you out a little by sharing a tasty, creepy Halloween treat that is most definitely braces-friendly! Enjoy!!
PEANUT BUTTER EYEBALLS*
Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, completely softened
2 cups plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 1/2 cups toasted rice cereal (like Rice Krispies)
12 ounces of white chocolate
1 tablespoon vegetable oil Food coloring - two colors
Directions: Combine the butter, powdered sugar, and peanut butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until well combined. (If you have no mixer, this can be done by hand). Then mix in the toasted rice cereal. Using your hands, form into 1/2-ounce balls (the size of a large marble) and refrigerate until firm (about 1 hour). Place the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt, adding vegetable oil partway through. After all chocolate is melted, stir until smooth. Dip the balls, one at a time into the melted white chocolate mix, using a fork to roll them around so they are entirely coated then remove them from the chocolate and set on a waxed paper lined sheet pan. Chill to set up about 30 minutes. Separate remaining white chocolate into two bowls and add 1-2 drops of food coloring each to tint each bowl a different color. Reheat chocolate if necessary and, using a small spoon, place a dollop of the colored chocolate on the eyeball to make an iris. Use a smaller drop of the contrasting color for the pupil. Let the chocolate set, place balls in individual mini muffin papers and serve. Makes 36 balls.

Fun Facts and Trivia About Braces and Teeth
Here are some fun facts and trivia from bracesinfo.com that we thought you might enjoy!
• Dr Charles Tweed was the first certified orthodontist in the US.
• The first "braces" were constructed by Pierre Fauchard in 1728. Fauchard's "braces" consisted of a flat strip of metal, which was connected to teeth by pieces of thread.
• Bands were invented by Schange in 1841. The first bands consisted of a strip of metal, with a screw to adjust their size.
• Orthodontic Brackets were invented by Edward Angle in 1915. The brackets consisted of little hooks of metal, which were attached to bands which went around your teeth.
• Dr Angle modified his design, producing the edgewise bracket in 1928. If you or your parents got braces before 1970, they probably got braces similar to those invented by Dr Angle
• If you are right handed, you will tend to chew your food on your right side. If you are left-handed, you will tend to chew your food on your left side.
• If one identical twin grows up without a given tooth coming in, the second identical twin will usually also grow up without the tooth
• If the roof of your mouth is narrow, you are more prone to snore since you are not getting enough oxygen through your nose.
• If your jaw is broken, they put it together with special screws.
• You will get fewer cavities if you eat a bag of candy in one sitting and then brush your teeth than if you slowly eat the candy a piece at a time all day.

Summer Sports Are Here, Keep those Braced Teeth Safe and in the Clear
Keeping Asheville Braces Safe
With Summer in full swing it is easy to forget that school sports are right around the corner, some as early as August 1st.
- We want to provide the most pertinent and relavent information regarding the protection of teeth from trauma.
- Mouth guards are a MUST with sports, plain and simple. It does not matter if you have braces or not.
- Contrary to common belief, football is NOT the source of most dental injuries. While hockey runs a close second, the highest incidence of trauma to teeth from adolescent sporting activities is basketball.
- Now Moms, don't bubble wrap your tiny basketball players, just get them a mouth guard!
- We provide mouth guards for all our patients that are wearing braces. The mouth guards that are worn over braces are a little different than what you might be used to.
- Boil and bite is not right! The mouth guard should not form fit around the brackets

The Importance of Wearing Your RetainersCongratulations on getting your braces off!
Unfortunately the “my teeth hurt a lot so I can only eat ice cream” excuse won’t work anymore, but now you’ve got that movie star smile you’ve always wanted!
Now it’s time to talk about retainers.
After your braces are removed, your teeth can begin to shift if they are not stabilized properly. Stabilization is what your retainers are all about! If you forget or refuse to wear you retainers, your teeth may end up shifting back to their previous position. Wearing your retainers around the clock is the very best way to insure that your teeth do not move back to the way they were before braces.
Here are a few things to remember when it comes to retainers…
-Brush your teeth after meals before putting your retainers back in.
-Brush your retainer every time you brush your teeth.
-Disinfect your retainer by soaking it in mouth wash.
-Keep your retainers in your retainer case when you are not wearing them.
-Never wrap your retainer in a napkin or paper towel because you might accidentally throw it away.
-Keep retainers out of reach of pets
Enjoy your smile and remember to wear your retainers!

Summer Is Almost Here!
Aside from summer camps, pool parties and beach trips, summer is also a great time to schedule your complementary orthodontic consultation! Since there won’t be as many school related scheduling conflicts, our appointment schedule, while filling up quickly, will be more open for you! When you come in for your consultation, you will get to meet Valerie, our treatment coordinator. She will give you a tour of the office, tell you about the great programs that we have going on, take some photos, an x-ray and introduce you to the rest of the team! Next, Dr. Scanlan will complete the exam and review his findings with you. If he feels that you are ready for braces, you will have the opportunity to go ahead and have your impressions taken on the same day!
Dr. Scanlan and his team would like to wish you the best as you finish up your last few weeks of school and testing! See you soon!

TS Orthodontics Reaching Out

Over Halloween 2009 Dr. Scanlan and his Team orchestrated a candy buy-back.
What is a buy back?
As every parent knows, when Halloween hits, candy is everywhere!! .........Dr. Scanlan wants it. In fact, Dr. Scanlan was rewarding his patients with Tokens from his rewards program for every pound of candy.
Where is Doctor Scanlan sending all this candy?
Having been in the military for four years himself, Dr. Scanlan knows there are children in underdeveloped countries who have been orphaned. These children know very little about what goes on outside of their country. Some of these children are told the U.S. is the reason they are orphaned. Dr. Scanlan sends candy to these children with the message that we care....
To the TS Orthodontics kids: See these kids? You have made their day :-)
Dr. Scanlan and TS Orthodontics plans to continue this kind of giving
