14 Ways to Avoid Colds and Flu - Cold, Flu and Sinus - Health.com
Now that cold and flu season is upon us, we wanted to give you some ways to avoid getting sick according to health.com!Every time you shake someone’s hand, wash yours
But don’t stop there. Wash them as much as possible, says Mark Mengel, MD, chair of community and family medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Running lots of water over your hands will dilute any germs and send them down the drain.
Keep your hands off
Touching your nose and your eyes may hurt you, Mengel says. Those are the most common places for germs to get in.
Go to bed
As if getting enough sleep on a normal basis isn’t hard enough, you need more z’s when you’re feeling under the weather. When you’re tired, your body isn’t fighting as hard, so Mengel suggests getting 8 to 10 hours a night.
Get your shot
Last year’s flu-shot shortages are, well, last year’s shortages, says Jeff Robertson, MD, and chief medical officer for health insurer Regence. Finding flu shots should be easier this year, but you should get one early.
Build up with healthy food
You may think it’s hard to eat healthily on a regular basis, but eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables supports your immune system, Robertson says. And that’s a lot easier than fighting off the flu.
Work out
Get those sweats on and exercise, says Ann G. Kulze, MD, CEO and founder of Dr. Ann and Just Wellness. Working out regularly enhances immune function, she explains.
Stay away
Keep your distance from people displaying symptoms like sneezing and coughing. While that strategy may seem obvious, it applies to more than just strangers and colleagues. Stay away from sick friends and family when possible, Robertson says.
Sanitize yourself
Keep sanitizing gel or alcohol-based hand wipes on you at all times. But read the label before you buy, says Robertson: Some wipes are not alcohol-based and won’t be as effective.
Another reason to quit
Smoking increases the risk of infections by making structural changes in the respiratory tract and decreasing immune response, according to a study of smokers and infection published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2004. In particular, Mengel says, smoking destroys cilia, the little hairlike fibers inside our noses; this can help increase infection risks.
Did you just double dip that chip?
Beware of the dip. It may be harboring more than savory salsa. Double-dippers may be passing germs to those who eat after them, Mengel says.
Another reason to shop
Our purses pick up germs like we do, according to Joseph Brasco, MD, author of The Great Physician’s Rx for Colds and Flu, so you could be re-infecting yourself every time you pick up your handbag. His suggestion: Put away your cloth purse during the winter months and carry one made of easier-to-wipe-down vinyl or leather. Of course, you could always just buy more purses.
I hear your mother calling
Biting your nails may be hurting you, Brasco says. Germs get under your nails and nibbling is a fast way to ingest them.
Try to smile
New research has found that happiness may help you. Carl Charnetski, MD, professor of psychology at Wilkes University, found that sex, positive thinking, playing with a pet, and other pleasurable behaviors will boost your immune system.
You want me to sneeze where?
It may sound strange, but when you have to cough and sneeze, do so into the crook of your elbow, not into your hands. Since your hands are a common source of germs, doing that will prevent them from spreading, Kulze says.

Braces-Friendly Halloween Treat!
Dr. Scanlan and his team want to remind you to stay away from foods that might break or damage your braces. We also want to help you out a little by sharing a tasty, creepy Halloween treat that is most definitely braces-friendly! Enjoy!!
PEANUT BUTTER EYEBALLS*
Ingredients:
1/4 cup butter, completely softened
2 cups plus 2 tablespoons powdered sugar
1 cup creamy peanut butter
1 1/2 cups toasted rice cereal (like Rice Krispies)
12 ounces of white chocolate
1 tablespoon vegetable oil Food coloring - two colors
Directions: Combine the butter, powdered sugar, and peanut butter in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with a paddle attachment. Mix on low speed until well combined. (If you have no mixer, this can be done by hand). Then mix in the toasted rice cereal. Using your hands, form into 1/2-ounce balls (the size of a large marble) and refrigerate until firm (about 1 hour). Place the white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Melt, adding vegetable oil partway through. After all chocolate is melted, stir until smooth. Dip the balls, one at a time into the melted white chocolate mix, using a fork to roll them around so they are entirely coated then remove them from the chocolate and set on a waxed paper lined sheet pan. Chill to set up about 30 minutes. Separate remaining white chocolate into two bowls and add 1-2 drops of food coloring each to tint each bowl a different color. Reheat chocolate if necessary and, using a small spoon, place a dollop of the colored chocolate on the eyeball to make an iris. Use a smaller drop of the contrasting color for the pupil. Let the chocolate set, place balls in individual mini muffin papers and serve. Makes 36 balls.

Happy Halloween from TS Orthodontics!
Halloween is just around the corner and that means lots of CANDY!!!Dr. Scanlan and his team want to make sure you have a fun and safe Halloween and that you know the difference between braces-safe and non-braces-safe candy. Sticky, chewy or hard candy can cause a great deal of damage to your brackets and wires, which can lead to more time spent in braces.
Here are some candies to avoid this year, if you are in braces.
Starburst®, Tootsie Roll®, Laffy Taffy®, salt water taffy, Jolly Rancher®, bubble and chewing gum, Air Heads®, Skittles®, Peanut M&M’s®, Snickers®, caramels and caramel and candy apples, jelly beans, Blow Pops®, Twizzlers®, Sugar Daddies®, Almond Joy®, Mike and Ike® and any other candies that are sticky, chewy, or hard.
Be safe and have fun!

Fun Facts and Trivia About Braces and Teeth
Here are some fun facts and trivia from bracesinfo.com that we thought you might enjoy!
• Dr Charles Tweed was the first certified orthodontist in the US.
• The first "braces" were constructed by Pierre Fauchard in 1728. Fauchard's "braces" consisted of a flat strip of metal, which was connected to teeth by pieces of thread.
• Bands were invented by Schange in 1841. The first bands consisted of a strip of metal, with a screw to adjust their size.
• Orthodontic Brackets were invented by Edward Angle in 1915. The brackets consisted of little hooks of metal, which were attached to bands which went around your teeth.
• Dr Angle modified his design, producing the edgewise bracket in 1928. If you or your parents got braces before 1970, they probably got braces similar to those invented by Dr Angle
• If you are right handed, you will tend to chew your food on your right side. If you are left-handed, you will tend to chew your food on your left side.
• If one identical twin grows up without a given tooth coming in, the second identical twin will usually also grow up without the tooth
• If the roof of your mouth is narrow, you are more prone to snore since you are not getting enough oxygen through your nose.
• If your jaw is broken, they put it together with special screws.
• You will get fewer cavities if you eat a bag of candy in one sitting and then brush your teeth than if you slowly eat the candy a piece at a time all day.
