On relationships: “I have never felt truly cherished by a lover. I have an inability to know what happiness feels like with a man. I say this honestly, and this is my new thing as of the past year: when I fight with someone I’m in a relationship with, I think, What would my fans think if they knew this was happening? How would they feel about my work and about me as a female if they knew I was allowing this to go on? And then I get out. I only know the happiness of putting a smile on someone’s face from the stage.”

On giving it her all while on stage: “When I’m onstage, I’m so giving and so open and myself. And when the spotlight goes off, I don’t know quite what to do with myself.”

On being proposed to by exes after breaking up: “How f—in’ romantic, you a–hole. Sure, pop a ring on my finger and make it all better. I can buy myself a f—in’ ring.”

Rosie Huntington-Whiteley transformers the darkness of the Moon to brightness

 Rosie Alice Huntington-Whiteley is a British model and actress, she is best known for modelling for Victoria's Secret and for replacing Megan Fox as the lead female character in the upcoming film Transformers: Dark of the Moon, part of the Transformers franchise

Born in Devon, England, Huntington-Whiteley she started modelling when she was still in high school. After a year as an intern, she was asked to model, and by 16 she was traveling the world. “It’s a tough industry, and you sacrifice a lot, for sure,” she says for the Vanity Fair. “I learned pretty quickly that it wasn’t all parties and getting free clothes and getting paid a lot of money. To be successful, you’ve got to be professional.” That attitude saw her through the filming of Transformers: Dark of the Moon, the third installment of the franchise, in which both Shia LaBeouf and Josh Duhamel reprise their roles. “I spent my whole summer with a bunch of testosterone-fueled men, including navy seals. It was fun going from fashion, where things are pristine and groomed, to an action set, where it was the end of the world. Every day I’d get my makeup done, and then there would be this moment when my makeup artist would have to destroy me.”

The Eternal Style of Grace Kelly

The rare beauty and stunning self-possession that propelled Grace Kelly into the Hollywood pantheon, onto the Best-Dressed List, and ultimately to Monaco’s royal palace were more than captivating—they were completely genuine. As London’s Victoria and Albert Museum unveils an exhibition devoted to Kelly’s style, which still inspires fashion from Hermès to Tommy Hilfiger to Mad Men’s costumer Janie Bryant, the author looks at the intertwined qualities of an icon: white-gloved ingénue, elegant goddess, passionate—and frankly sexual—romantic.

It’s unfortunate that the designer of the Philadelphia dress is unknown; whoever dreamed up this lace number clearly ranks among the era’s greatest costumers, with Head and Helen Rose. Though the pattern here is intricate, the cut is simple and straightforward in Kelly’s characteristically elegant way.

This close-up of the civil-ceremony dress displays the exquisite detailing that went into Kelly’s clothes. One of Kelly’s style virtues was that she appreciated and wore designs for their quality, not their cost, and wouldn’t turn up her nose at a gown lacking couture pedigree.

Pomp and Polish

One icon begets another: Kelly’s frequent use of Hermès’s haut à courroies bag—most notably to shield her first pregnancy from the paparazzi—led the leather purse to be dubbed the “Kelly” bag, a tag that remains today. And her sunglasses are still en vogue; in the summertime, downtown Manhattan is brimming with those frames.

It’s hard now to appreciate the importance of millinery in Kelly’s age—as an expression of fashion and taste, regardless of utilitarian function. Some Monegasque elite whispered that Kelly’s hats were too flamboyant for the palace.

The cover of “Grace Kelly Style” features Kelly in an Oleg Cassini dress that she wore at a shoot for Cosmopolitan. Before she met Prince Rainier, Kelly was briefly engaged to Cassini, who helped develop the flattering cuts and styles that would come to be known as her style.

Blue Wonder

Olivia Wilde has never believed in waiting. After graduating from Phillips Academy, in Andover, Massachusetts, she sidestepped college, took the stage name Wilde (yes, after Oscar), and headed west. At 19, following a six-month courtship, she married movie producer and director Tao Ruspoli, the son of the late Italian prince Dado Ruspoli. She is the daughter of Andrew and Leslie Cockburn, the investigative journalists and documentary-film makers, but she rejected the family trade in favor of a career in front of the camera. Breaking out as the provocative bisexual teenager on the television sensation The O.C. and then landing on another Fox hit series, House, she now finds herself, at 26, in the role of Hollywood’s next hot property. In December she will star opposite Jeff Bridges in TRON: Legacy. The first TRON (1982) revolves around hacker Kevin Flynn (Bridges), who is abducted into the virtual world of the computer and forced to fight his way out. Though it wasn’t a box-office smash, it was a forerunner in special effects and became a cult classic. Bridges reprises his role 28 years later. “I got to spend most of my time with Jeff—just learning from him, watching him, and listening to him,” says Wilde, who plays Quorra, his warrior protector. “Being able to shadow him was a master class in acting, and also in behaving.” After TRON, Wilde will appear with Harrison Ford in director Jon Favreau’s Cowboys & Aliens. “What’s great is that I don’t have to play the weeping lady in distress,” she says. “I get to play a pretty cool and powerful woman.” She adds, “I love the horses, I love the guns. For an actor, to be in a Western feels almost like a rite of passage. It’s uniquely American.”

The West Coast Warhol, Revealed

A picture may be worth a thousand words—but with a photographer as beloved as the late Herb Ritts, perhaps it was only a matter of time before someone added a written account, too. Now Charles Churchward, who first met Ritts during his tenure as Vanity Fair’s executive design director, has stepped up to the plate with Herb Ritts: The Golden Hour, a richly illustrated biography. “We were seated next to each other at a dinner during the Milan collections back in 1980, and we just started talking,” Churchward said at the book’s L.A. release party. “A few years later, we began doing photo shoots together, and later we became neighbors when we both took second homes in Santa Fe.”

Churchward was surrounded by Ritts’ iconic images of Alek Wek, Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington Burns (in Versace in 1990, above) and Richard Gere (who penned the book’s foreword), all of which will stay on view at the Fahey/Klein Gallery in L.A. through December 4. “Readers want to know about the person behind the camera for great photographs,” Churchward explained. “A lot of the images illustrate stories from the 100 people I interviewed to make this biography. He was always shooting his friends and subjects for himself, so there’s a rich archive. He was a West Coast Warhol for documenting the times.”
