Nostalgic Interior Design Trends Continue for Spring/Summer 2011

We already know that pink is in for 2011 but there are some other design styles worthy of mention for  spring/summer of this year.

I think I mentioned in a former post after visiting America’s Mart in Atlanta, I couldn’t believe all the vintage furnishings and accessories I saw. It’s a charming way to reflect on the past by incorporating old worn-looking books, antique furniture, old hat boxes, hats, fabrics with script writing, vintage writing utensils, an old camera or typewriter, or chalkboards into your decor.  Flavor the new with the old. 

I also think that vintage decor  is so popular right now because it takes us back to a simpler time.  It reminds of us of a better world and is comforting in a time of such uncertainty around us.

Vintage Books - Country Living

Look for decadent roses and other floral imagery to make a big statement these next two seasons. I've already seen these in drapery, bedding, upholstery, artwork, rugs, table linens and china.

Accents in felted wool will also be popular.

Keys, both vintage and new, will become just as popular as clocks  in wall and tabletop vignettes.

Equestrian  accessories will find their way into décor this spring and summer.  Place a pair of riding boots by your bedside to pick things up a pace!

You are going to see lots of modern and vintage patterns this year. Look for polka dots, stripes, damask and toile in fabrics, wrapping and scrapbooking  papers and wall coverings.  I'm sure you've noticed my background on this blog.  I love the black and white damask combined with the pink accents.  Way to go!

Polka Dots, Stripes, and Floral Patterns Nicely Combined -Decor Pad

Lanterns with intricate details or vibrant hues will shed some light this year. How about including some in your living room by the fireplace or on a bookshelf? I’ve even used them in bathrooms.

Greek and Roman busts and urns as well as other architectural pieces will  add a neoclassic look.  Try some with different heights on a mantle  paired with  some other textured  accessories like glass or metal.

Venetian-style lions will also bring back a 70’s look in home accents. Have you saved any from your college or disco days?  You didn't have one on the wall in your dorm room?

Believe it or not, gold is making a comeback. It’s not that bright shiny traditional Williamsburg  chandelier color; it’s more of an antique, gilded, or burnished bronze hue. It's so that vintage look again!

Mixing Old With New - Decor Pad

What is in store for us in the world of  home design for 2011?  We already know that Honeysuckle is the new color. What other colors have you noticed in the linens department  of your favorite store? Gray?  Peacock blue?  Citrus yellow?  Avocado? Coral? Burgundy? I've also noticed more ethnic/global patterns in fabrics as well as the mixing of vintage with contemporary decor.  Remember all of those chandeliers with the glass  or crystal teardrops; the mercury glass candlesticks and lamp bases; the mirrored chests; the fabric headboards; the low, wide contemporary upholstered chairs; the drum-shaped lampshades; the use of slipcovers; the toile fabrics and wallpaper? (check out my new blog template)  They are still popular this year.  You'll also continue to see animal prints and animal-type figurines.  A duller-looking metallic gold finish will also continue its popularity as will vinyl wall art. Likewise, hardwood floors and granite countertops will still be coveted home improvements.

What else is happening in home design for 2011? Are  we headed for still larger homes? What are the new colors for kitchen cabinetry? Is wallpaper in vogue?
