Gore Hill Memorial Cemetery is located on the Pacific Highway, in the northern suburb of St Leonards. It was established in 1868 with 14,456 burials taking place until it ceased operating in 1974. It is now on the heritage register since it contains many monuments to early pioneers and the remnants of the older Devonshire Street Cemetery, close to the city, which was cleared in 1901 to allow for the development of Central railway station.
